DeLay: Cruz Must Sue Over Affair Allegations or Risk Presidential Bid
newsmax.com ^ | Bill Hoffmann

Posted on 03/29/2016 11:43:14 AM PDT by RoosterRedux

The National Enquirer story that alleges Ted Cruz had extramarital affairs with five women is a "festering boil" that could sink the Texas senator's presidential bid unless takes immediate legal action to discredit it, former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay tells Newsmax TV. "I think if he would sue The Enquirer right now, it would put the story to bed," DeLay, a Texas Republican, said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

Cruz has angrily denied any truth to the Enquirer report and charges that Republican presidential front-runner is behind it — an allegation Trump strongly denies.

"He needs to get a hold of some people that know how to handle this kind of thing because this is so typical of politicians. They just wish that the story would go away," DeLay said.

Even if it's false and the Inquirer knew it was false when they printed it, Cruz can't win, because he'd have to prove they knew it was wrong when they printed it, and that's really hard to do.

I respect your values.

Do you know how many years ago it was that Trumped bragged about the affairs, or has he done so recently?

It would be stupid to sue. Headlines about the lawsuit would saturate the MSM for the rest of the campaign. Let the anonymous “accusers” PROVE what they are saying.

Trump has bedded hundreds of women, cheating on every wife he has ever had and you are making a pretense of caring whether a candidate has had an affair?

Give one shred of evidence that Cruz has had an affair. All you need is Trump’s own books to confirm his.

what the hell are you all going to do if he’s innocent/ You’ve all slimed him terribly without any hard proof, and you are swo heravily invested in the idea that he is guilty, that now nothign but a guilty plea wil lsuffice for any of you because it will mean eating crow if he is innocent-

I am not in denial- I am simply waiting for any hard evidence to come forth - if none come forth- then I have not engaged in rumor mongering and gossiping and have nothing to lose- IF he is guilty then the evidence will destroy him without anyone’s need to do so- there seems to be such a sick disgusting desire to see the man go down in flames that everyone is inventing crap to make it look as though he’s guilty before any of the freakin facts are known!

If anyone of you were accused of something wrongfully, and you had constant rumors and gossips maligning your name and falsely scrutinizing your every move to make it look like you were guilty, it would be a whole different story- To have someone accuse you of ‘not denying it loud enough’ not denying it often enough’ not saying exact phrases that they demand you say etc etc etc accusing you of covering up something you aren’t guilty of you would be pissed too- The old adage of ‘treat others as you yourself would like to be treated applies to cases such as this as well

IF he is guilty, the evidence will be enough to cause his downfall- if he’s innocent, then you’ve all contributed to a horrible ugly atmosphere of slander and rumor mongering in the hopes of destroying an innocent man and his family- this God hates with such a passion that He calls it an abomination- a word so strong that those who commit such acts should be ashamed of themselves- This is why it’s always wise to simply let the facts come out IF there are any rather than making crap up and even going so far as to deceitfully photoshop something to make it look like cosmetician it isn’t like was dun to a phone cover to make it look like a condom container- What the hell is wrong with people?

[[ No. He can’t sue because he is a public figure.

So is it OK for people who call themselves conservatives to lie constantly these days? Trump has never said that he has slept with “hundreds” of women. You should be ashamed of yourself for the hateful libel that you have been posting. Are you too stupid to realize that your statements here form a written record that Trump could act on at some later date. You have shown easily proven intentional malice repeatedly over the past few months. I wouldn’t want to be in your shoes should Trump ever take notice. He could track you down your libelous rear end in less time than it takes say Conservative Joy.

Trump wrote the art of the deal in 1987, it is in that book that he brags about his affairs. The book is a bestseller and currently ranked #140 on Amazon for book sales. He has never to my knowledge retracted anything he wrote in the book.

You are spreading false information. Look it up! Private citizens making libelous statements can most definitely be sued. Public officials and figures have a harder time proving defamation, but it has been successfully been done in the past. Lying about someone on a public forum such as Free Republic most definitely can open you up to some form of legal action in the future.

OK, so as far as you know the most recent instance of him bragging about an affair is 29 years ago.

I’m not saying that absolves him, but the time frame matters to me personally in assessing it against him.

The book is a bestseller and people are still reading it so to me unless he retracts what he wrote he is still bragging about it. After all he is still collecting royalties from the book isn’t he? Adultery in any presidential candidate matters to me. We must all decide for ourselves.

If it were trump I could see myself desperately trying to say everything possible to show everyone be fair so I understand your post. Now as far as Cruz goes, these alligator solely by themselves would have been laughed at. The problem is that Cruz has had a slew of questionable ethical situations all through the campaign. He never takes responsibility...heck most times he blames trump. He is very sneaky and will do anything to win. That is why many are not doubting that Cruz cheated on his wife numerous times. It goes very perfectly with his character. And you have to admit few of these ever end up lies. They almost all end up with a press conference with wife standing next to her husband. We just had another in Alabama where the governor a big conservative who swore no phone calls or anything was done and oops....another liar down the tubes.

I like Tom Delay, but he was a pest control operator before going into Congress, not a lawyer. Even being able to prove that the allegations are false is not enough to win a libel case if you are a public figure. You have to be able to prove not only that the story is false, but also that the publication knew it was false and that there was no reasonable basis for them to even think it MIGHT be true. That is a very difficult hurdle to overcome. So you do sue and drag the story out even longer (giving the NE exactly what they want), or do you deny the story and move on with your campaign?

Really if you watch the news that most people pay attention to, this story is not getting much legs, other than to highlight the sleaziness of the campaign in general. It is only on sites like this that it is a "big" story.

No it goes perfectly with the character they have created him to be- They are blaming him for tights that pacs do- insisting he must know about them and apparently approve of them without any proof whatsoever he did know about them or approve of them- the deal with carson- Trump campaign also said that carson was dropping out- (and I’s sure trump didn’t do it personally, but his pacs did from the reports at the time-) but trump gets a pass and cruz is labeled slimy dirty ted- Then someone in GQ states that a ‘cruz operative’ bought the photo of malania from GQ- thios turns otu to be a lie fro m what i understand because GQ did not have the rights to sell the photo in the first place- but that doesn’t matter- anti-cruz folks jump all over it and directly link it to Ted and call him dirty slimy ted- and ‘lyin ted’- Ted states, and rightfully so- that trump was contributing to an atmosphere of hate in the country- and he was- yet he’s accused of ‘siding with the left’ for pointing out the obvious

on and on and on it goes

I don’t think the NE ever came out and said if the claims were true or not. All the NE did was write stuff like “...there are reports that Cruz may have had several affairs...”

“...sources say that...”

It’s not like it was an investigative report. More like Harriet and Gertrude talking about the gossip they overheard on the party line.

“Well - that’s what I heard Shirley say - and she lives just two doors down from him!”

a libelous statement is a statement of fact that is untrue- the fella that stated a public figure can’t sue soemoen liek NE is correct- they are NOT stating their article as fact- even if it does harm- they are very careful NOT to state it as fact unlike those who state things as fact that are known to be false in the effort to harm an individual-

Exactly- and the courts have ruled that as dispicable as they are, slime rags liek NE have the right to do that IF they do not represent it as fact

"They almost all end up with a press conference with wife standing next to her husband."

Anyone who doesn't see that this is exactly where all this is heading is ... decruzional...

The GOPe #NeverTrump kiddie train is now #GOPstuckpigwithsquarewheels because they made their bed with #LusTed and came up with fleas ... no time to anoint MailmanJr, so the gambit is to run #CheaTed to the calendar limit (probably another 10 days) - trying to muck Wisconsin, and then pivot to promote Kasich in New York once #PerveTed confesses.
