I’m not sanguine about church/state mixes which is pretty much what would have been needed to do this.
We have remnants of it now, and while it isn’t literally cutting ears off, it might be cutting gospel audiences off.
There are some battles that it is prudent to cede in order to win a war. So they don’t want a creche at City Hall. Don’t push it. Rent a billboard and put it up there. So they don’t want teachers to preach about Jesus. (Though they seem to be making an exception for Allah sometimes.) Again don’t push it. Teach little children at home how wonderful Jesus can be and they’ll tell their playmates and the smarty atheist schoolmasters will be complaining it can’t be gotten out of the schools with a crow bar.

Retribution from a relative might be a possibility, which is probably why it’s done this way. (At least it’s probably just sharia in Indonesia and they don’t involve infidels. In Singapore the joy is shared to all religions as well as none.)
