Trump meets with GOP lawmakers in DC, urges party to ‘embrace’ him

Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump met Monday in Washington with congressional Republicans and other conservative leaders, attempting to forge a relationship with party leaders while urging them to “embrace this movement.”

Trump described the meeting as a success and just the “beginning” of such efforts, as he tries to convince a seemingly reluctant GOP establishment to join forces with him.

“We had a really good meeting. It is a beginning, but it was a very good one, with some of the most respected people in Washington,” Trump said after the private discussion with roughly two-dozen Republicans including Sens. Tom Cotton of Arkansas and Alabama's Jeff Sessions, who has already endorsed Trump.

The billionaire businessman sought the meeting as he adds to his delegate count, vowing he will eventually clinch the nomination. Yet he still faces opposition from rivals Ted Cruz and John Kasich and plotting by some Republicans to derail his outsider campaign with an alternative candidate.

“If people want to be smart, they should embrace this movement,” Trump said. “If they don’t want to be smart, the whole thing could go down.”

Among those also in attendance Monday was New York GOP Rep. Chris Collins, whose post-meeting analysis was similar to Trump’s and who sounded a sense of the inevitable.

now that he has gone to Foggy Bottom hat in band waiting their support...

I’ll eagery await the screeds, the snarky never again, changing my support, He’s an establishment hack, he fooled me but never again liar posts.

Who’s first? I know, perhaps we can just use the caucus threads to call them out?

This ought ought to be a fun thread!

The establishment will eventually line up behind him. They know that if Trump is not the nominee after all of his populist support, that his voters won’t vote for any republican down the ticket. Trump not being the nominee means the death of the GOP - and they know it. They are just having a hard time accepting it. But they will - just give it time.. The five stages of grief are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and then acceptance. I believe they are moving into the bargaining phase now....

“If people want to be smart, they should embrace this movement,” Trump said. “If they don’t want to be smart, the whole thing could go down.”

That doesn’t sound like hat in hand to me. It could be worse, he could have had a secret meeting with JEB!

OK I’ll be the first then. Now what am I supposed to do? I’m not a cruzlim so the wild eyed, foaming at the mouth schtick doesn’t come naturally to me. Lemme give it a try: oh, I’m done with him now. Donald Trump must be SAAAAAATAN!

Hows that?

I am not a Trump supporter, however ...

I think he senses victory.

If he does well after tomorrow’s primaries, he may well approach the Cruz and / or Kasich camps.

Eight plus months, most of us have finished grieving. Not an ordinary election and Trump is not a republican. I have no idea what the kids up top will do and don’t particularly care. My friends and family are split on whether they vote Trump if he wins the nomination and whether he would beat Hill.

We’ll see. I suspect the gop establishment is having its heart and mind changed. The persuasion goes thusly: if DT is screwed out of the nomination, Trump supporters go ballot box jihadi and vote for every ‘rat down ticket.

Nothing like gentle persuasion to bring reason and common sense to the table.

I don’t think its hat in hand, more like from a position of strength.

Read "The Art of the Deal"

Trump only negotiates from a position of strength. He would not have gone to the meeting had he not thought he had the upper hand.

now that he has gone to Foggy Bottom hat in band waiting their support...>>> well i won’t go there i just see that he knows that to win he has got to have votes, large rallies, and work with dc to get elected. I think the dc cartel is like the union bosses on a job site. without them you won’t move a brick. they are evil incarnate, but again if you want to build a building somebody needs to move the stones.

The GOPe must give up it’s demand for the Sudetenland!

Seriously, as long as the GOPe refuses to cede ANY of it’s anti-conservative policies there can be no successful negotiations with them by anyone.

Exactly. This is a master negotiator, someone who has literally done hundreds or thousands of very complex deals. He is not going to come to anybody hat in hand. That is just not his style. His style is that if he is in a weak position, he gathers strength until he is able to deal from a better position and get what he wants or needs.
