Bergdahl told a general who investigated the case that he hoped to cause an alarm by leaving his post, then walk to a larger base in Afghanistan so he could have an audience with a top commander.
"So, the idea was to -- it was -- literally, it was a sacrificial -- it was a self-sacrifice thing," Bergdahl said, according to the transcript of a 2014 interview with Maj. Gen. Kenneth Dahl.

Just another Leftist narcissist. It’s all about how good a person he is.......never mind he was trying to be captured by enemy forces. Perhaps he wanted to be the pawn that Obama sold out for......perhaps he could have ended up like Nicholas Berg......another guy who wanted to be captured and negotiated for......didn’t work out so well for Berg, but at that time there wasn’t a President who negotiated with terrorists.
By his own admission he deserted.
He deserted a front line post in a time of war.
He went over to the enemy...he sought them out.
His crazed father encouraged him via email to “stand with men of honor,” who believe as he did when his son wrote him about his growing dissatisfaction with the US military.
So this loony son, who was kicked out of the US Coast Guard during boot camp because he was not mentally capable of their duties, who then went and joined up with the army and was deployed to Afghanistan, then followed what he felt his father’s advise was.
At the very least, he should spend the next 20 years in Leavenworth making smaller rocks out of bigger rocks.
