CBO: Charge drivers by the mile(FTS)
americanthinker.com ^ | 3/15/2016 | Rick Moran

Posted on 03/15/2016 6:43:08 AM PDT by rktman

On the surface - and for all you shallow thinkers out there who are besotted with the idea of "fairness" - the proposal makes sense. Those who use the highways more should pay more, right?

Um, no not really. The idea that the government should be able to monitor your driving is antithetical to the idea of liberty. And does anyone believe that the monitoring would stop there? There would be calls to install breathalyzers in every car, governors to prevent you from exceeding the speed limit. Perhaps they'd figure out a way to charge you for excess emissions.

Key word once again: :"CONTROL" As far as I can tell, there aren't enough priuses or teslas or leafs or volts currently on the road to diminish the revenues that much. I could be wrong of course as Mrs. rktman reminds me of often. Besides, all the newer cars already have black boxes in them. If 'onstar' can unlock your car, I'm pretty sure they can check your mileage and shut you down if you ain't paying your fair share.

The communists have long wanted to limit and monitor mobility.

**Those who use the highways more should pay more, right?**

They do. They buy more gas and therefore pay more in gas taxes.

This is all about big brother.

We already pay a tax on gasoline. The more you drive, the more you use. And if you drive a more fuel-efficient vehicle - something that the government has decided is "good" - you get a tax break essentially. Additionally, we have to pay the tax even for the gas used off highway.

How could per-mile taxes be any better than that for the government, except for the additional ability to monitor and thus control us?

I might be willing to go along with it-but only one condition:

charge every politician $25,000 per each lie they tell.

Can’t or won’t pay it? Throw them in prison until

they do.

That has been in the works for a while as carbon credits.

Why stop there?

When people leave their homes (by car, foot, bicycle, whatever), they enter public spaces that are patrolled by the police. Those people should pay more towards the police budget than those who just stay home and watch TV.

Therefore, the government should mandate that every citizen wear a locator device on their person. It's only fair.

And notice that I said "citizen" in the above. Illegal immigrants would not be subjected to this. Just because.

This proposal shows how libs screw with a person’s mind.

Those who drive more already pay more. It takes more fuel to drive more, all vehicles being equal.

But liberals say they are not equal as smaller cars buy less fuel and so pay less in gas tax.

Yep, they do. Because liberals forced them to.

They also cause less wear and tear to the roads.

The fuel tax is most likely the most fair way to pay for roads because it charges users in direct proportion to how much they damage the roads. A monster truck that buys one gallon of fuel to go 5 miles is paying almost ten times as much to go 40 miles as the driver who gets 40 miles to the gallon.

If it was ever implemented, I wouldn't be surprised if the gas tax was left in place and the usage tax was added on top of that.

More of our money plus control.

If you/we have to send in our mileage 2x/year to our insurance companies, the state has that information.

This is one of those sticky wickets.

If you are a conservative, you believe in paying your share of costs like contributing to Free Republic.

If you are really a liberal, you want someone else to pay for your costs like never contributing to Free Republic.

There’s a commercial for a Chevy car that mutes the radio until you out your seatbelt on, I guess that gives some people warm fuzzies but it infuriates me.

We pay taxes on gas.

Those who drive more already pay more taxes.

I am so sick and tired of people whose only goal in life is to bilk more money out of us.
