Early this morning, as Aliy Zirkle (bib #13) was making her way towards the Nulato checkpoint, a snowachiner repeatedly attempted to harm her and her team. One dog received a non-life threatening injury.

Upon arrival at the Nulato checkpoint, Zirkle reported the incident to race officials and a report was filed with the Alaska State Troopers. Contact was also made with the village police officer in Nulato.

Jeff King (bib #61), who was behind Zirkle, experienced a similar incident 12-miles prior to his arrival at the Nulato checkpoint. This incident resulted in the death of Nash, a three- year-old male. In addition, Crosby, a three-year-old male, and Banjo, a two-year-old male, received non-life threatening injuries. King requested and received medical attention at the checkpoint.

The suspect has been identified by the village police officer in Nulato, and authorities are conducting an investigation.

Regrettably, this incident very much alters the race of the two mushers competing for a win; however, both are going to continue on their way toward Nome.

WTH? If someone is attacking you, you have the right to defend yourself. Kinda think someone driving a snowmachine at you would be considered assault with a deadly weapon. Maybe the cops will get to this assclown before an angry group of mushers does.

Based on the probable attitude of any nearby “angry group of mushers” and/or most Alaska dogsled fans, the snowmobile rider BETTER HOPE the Alaska troopers find him first!

(I wonder if snowmobile riders taste like dog food?)

“Who would do such a thing?”

Someone who wants a good beating is my guess.

Could be an accident - A hit-and-ski-off equal to a drive-away accident.

Could also be a dog-lover/PETA-fanatic who was trying to kill the driver to “free the dogs” from “slavery and injustice” in their harness! Few Alaskan wilderness towns are large enough for a suspect to waltz away free from this.

The village where the attacks have taken place is an Indian village. Over 90%. The local cops have identified the suspect. No identity being released.

Another coverup for a minority.

Long dark nights? Cabin fever? I know there are a lot of people that do not like dog sledding. But, if you don’t live the lifestyle, you may not understand. I don’t live the life style but I get it. Crappy ending for Nash.

The mushers should carry guns for the bears and rampant bull moose attacks. Take them out and shoot them.

It’s a 1200 mile professional race!

Are really sure you want to carry ANY extra weight along?

The race rules **require** mushers carry at least a .44 mag - in case of moose attack.

I guess they forgot about drunks on snowmachines....

Two dog-teams were hit - it was no accident.

I’m sorry but I would have sworn it was a “rogue moose” and shot it.

Sounds reasonable. But, how much did the outside world alter it with the availability of a snowmachine.

I didn't say the guy was a genius, or principled, or right. Just implying angry and drunk. Not a good combo.

I figured they did out of necessity. 1200 mile race through bears, moose and wolves it should be mandatory

Hmmmm. Booze and guns, cars, chainsaws, snow machines and a whole lot of other things do not mix well.
