Keith Emerson, the outsized co-founding keyboardist in Emerson Lake and Palmer has died. Long-time bandmate Carl Palmers publicist has posted a message that confirms Emersons passing last night (March 10) in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 71. Keith was a gentle soul whose love for music and passion for his performance as a keyboard player will remain unmatched for many years to come, Palmer said. He was a pioneer and an innovator whose musical genius touched all of us in the worlds of rock, classical and jazz.

One of the original synthesizer wizards. I had a buddy in college who worshipped ELP, especially the Brain Salad sound.

I love emerson’s stuff and the beatles are my favorite band. I have studied emerson’s compositions and play some of them. There is little that is beatlesque in his compositions. Perhaps that may be the case for greg lake’s stuff and others that emerson collaborated with. But when it comes to keith’s stuff — the influences were classical and early 20th century.

Sad news. I loved E, L and P. I’d say Keith’s main inspiration was Aaron Copland.

My favorite band of all time.
Never get tired of any of their music (well, maybe Love Beach).
Karen Evil 9 - BEST song ever, IMHO.
RIP Keith

Thanks for the article. Sad to see him go out like that. I wonder if one so skilled and known for his keyboard talents; if once that was gone he thought it was all pointless? Of course not - but I can understand that. Especially once depression takes over.

I was wondering the same. He was a genius and more than either of the other two ELP members responsible for their unique sound. I saw them once in the 70s.

My first album was ELPs Trilogy.
Almost 45 years later, still my favorite band. Hands Down.
