He has spent 20 years observing how the DC conservative media endorses candidates who mock conservative principles and values.

One of the really good points: “Donald Trump is the only Republican candidate who seems to have any inclination to act strictly in America’s interest. More importantly, he is the only Republican candidate who is willing to even address the problem. Trump may not have been right to say that we need to stop letting more Muslims into the country or, at least, examine the issue, but he wasn’t crazy to suggest it either. And like when he said the obvious about Iraq, the first people to condemn him and deny the obvious were conservatives. Somehow, being conservative now means denying the obvious and saying idiotic fantasies like “Islam is always peaceful” or “Our war is not with a radical strain of Islam.” Uh, sorry, but no it is not, and yes it is. And if getting a president who at least understands that means voting for Trump, then I guess I am not a conservative.”

Take the nomination from Trump with a brokered convention and I am done with the GOP forever.

The better way to understand this current situation is tounderstand the divide in Conservatism between the Dogmatics vrs the Realists.

This is an old divide in Conservatism. The Dogmatist care nothing about political realities, only the purity of the dogma matters to them. The Realist understands you have to be able to advance the political ball down the field to achieve the goals of the dogma.

Reagan, who was a realist, wrote about it.

By Ronald Reagan in his autobiography An American Life

“When I began entering into the give and take of legislative bargaining in Sacramento, a lot of the most radical conservatives who had supported me during the election didn’t like it. “Compromise” was a dirty word to them and they wouldn’t face the fact that we couldn’t get all of what we wanted today. They wanted all or nothing and they wanted it all at once. If you don’t get it all, some said, don’t take anything. I’d learned while negotiating union contracts that you seldom got everything you asked for. And I agreed with FDR, who said in 1933: ‘I have no expectations of making a hit every time I come to bat. What I seek is the highest possible batting average.’ If you got seventy-five or eighty percent of what you were asking for, I say, you take it and fight for the rest later, and that’s what I told these radical conservatives who never got used to it.

The GOPe's definition of "constitutional conservatism" would have Americans believe the the Constitution was meant to be a suicide pack, and the conservatism of our founding fathers was meant to be used as license to cannibalize America’s wealth with unfair trade pacts and to supplant the America people with foreign illegal invaders and rubber-stamped unvetted legal immigrants.

If the choice is between American patriotism and sovereignty and GOPe "conservatism," I'll chose the former - just as our founding fathers did.

Well I have a real problem with this guy's defense of The Donald's statements on Iraq.

If you want to argue that invading Iraq was a bad idea-- fine. But please spare me the leftist b.s. about "Bush lied." You only show yourself to be a chump or a liar.

That's a good article, and he makes the best case possible for Trump. Without insult insulting anyone, I might add.

I still think he falls into the easy trap of blaming the GOP in general for not being conservative enough, which I think ignores political realities. And I think he's really missing the mark by punting on the "big government" issue.

But I still respect the opinion and the way it was expressed.

The writer makes some good points. I don't agree with him on all of them, but overall, he makes some excellent arguments. Especially the hypocrisy of the GOP establishment giving us failed “moderate” candidates repeatedly, but now attacking Trump for not being conservative enough. Or Republican enough. As if that is what they really want. No, the truth is, the GOPe would rather have Hillary. That fact alone is enough to turn me into a Trump supporter.

Sure, we signed up to give our lives for our country, and I will never regret doing so. But doesn’t our commitment require a corresponding responsibility on the part of the president to only expect us to do so when it is both necessary and in the national interest? And since when is bringing democracy to Iraq and Afghanistan so much in the national interest that it is worth killing or maiming 50,000 Americans to try to achieve?

Great post...

I’m not sure if conservativism will be defined to obscurity. But for now, can’t we all agree to be PATRIOTS?
