[Story from April 2015] Soldiers Being FORCED to Remove Combat Patches From Uniforms
Army Times and Colorado Gazette via The Federalist Papers ^ | March 2 , 2016 | Robert Gehl

Soldiers are livid after being told to remove their combat patches in an attempt to be “welcoming” to new recruits.

It’s an insane move that goes against the unofficial combat patch creed: “You earn it. You keep it. You wear it.” But that’s apparently the policy now for Fort Carson’s 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team.

Soldiers are told to strip their uniforms bare to the bone, only showing the name, rank, American Flag, U.S. Army tape and the 4th Infantry Division insignia, the Army Times is reporting.

According to officials, the move is designed to promote a “unified army culture.”

Brigade Commander Col. David Hodne issued the requirement. He told the Colorado Gazette it’s not about making new recruits feel jealous.

...

Hodne’s unit, which has seen a radical reorganization over the past year from tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles to eight-wheeled Strykers, is loaded with brand-new privates whose uniforms are bare of insignia. Instead of standing out, the new guys look like everyone else in training.

...

U.S. Army Iraq war veteran Drew Norman:

“This was obviously started by officers without combat time. This isn’t about making the new guys feel welcome, it’s about making the new officers feel superior.

The fact that we have 22 year old college kids ordering 18 year multiple combat tour veterans and lecturing them on war tells you all you need to know about how broken our commissioning system is.”

U.S. Army Afghan war veteran Stephen Carroll:

“I think it’s an absolutely horrid idea. Simply because some of them don’t fall into the group of those who have gone down range doesn’t mean that everyone else should hide what they’ve done. It’s the military, not a group of middle school students.”

U.S. veteran Michael Mumford, who used more colorful language:

Noobie officers are arrogant and naïve.
When I was in Vietnam had a new officer. A whole 10 days in country. As he was walking through our compound one of the guys did not salute him. This noobie O2 chewed Casey (an E6) a new one. The next morning this same officer walked by Casey and Casey shouted to him that he needed to salute and commenced to dress the young O2 down about saluting etiquette. Casey was wearing the Medal of Honor he received in Korea and military tradition require a salute to its wearer. Casey put his medal away later that day.

In the meantime, civilian police Class A uniforms have more fruit salad than a vegan convention.

“the move is designed to promote a “unified army culture.”

Whats that?

“Brigade Commander Col. David Hodne issued the requirement.”

Uh huh. And who gave him the order to issue this requirement?

I’m not sure I understand the problem. I presume we are talking here about the utility uniform, the BDU or ACU, or whatever it is called.

On our utility uniforms, U.S. Marines have NEVER worn combat patches of any kind. Nor, do we wear division patches, regimental insignia, and most often not even an American flag. It is a working uniform and doesn’t need a lot of decorating.

We have a name patch, a patch that says: “U.S. Marines” and most importantly, the thing that is on ALL of our uniforms and covers (hats), the Marine Corps Emblem, The Eagle, Globe and Anchor of the Corps.

“The way I looked at it, I had a wealth of experience to draw upon and learn from.”

And that’s exactly what any smart “manager” does.

Good for you.

No need to compete since everyone gets a participation trophy.

Only if you are allowed to participate. (Straight male light skinned folks need not apply).

>>> U.S. veteran Michael Mumford, who used more colorful language <<<

I bet he did. And it shouldn’t be sensored.

The youngsters, regardless of rank, need to know what will be asked of them.

I’m a civilian! And even I know that fundamental fact!

WTF is going on!

"Esprit de corps is a very fundamental morale factor in a fighting force. You’d think young troops when seeing their leaders are war veterans they’d look up to them,..."

I remember when the 1st Ranger Battalion first got activated and started setting up shop at Ft. Stewart. The Commanding General of that sleepy little place wasn't a very particularly impressive fellow; didn't get much respect; Just a white haired gentleman who looked long past retirement age. .... Until we noticed that he war jump wings with three little gold stars on them, from WWII.

I’m surprised they’re letting them keep the US flag on the uniform. I hope the payback that Obama is earning is paid back to the nth degree.

Unless they have written authorization from DA or they are a “General of the Army” (5 star, none living at this time) they cannot deviate from AR 670-1. That is an illegal order and does not have to be followed.
