This is definitely true, I think his sons maybe led Donald to see the light, they are big time hunters and gun rights advocates.
His sons didn’t get their love of hunting from Donald. Ivana’s father in Czechoslovakia was the source of that. Don, Jr said his father doesn’t understand why the sons like to hunt.
As best as people have been able to figure, Donald has been a Life Member of the NRA only since 2014 or 2015. Hopefully, his sons’s views on guns are rubbing off on him.

That does not necessarily make Donald Trump a principled defender of the 2nd Amendment. He might be, he might not be. What it does make him is a defender of Donald Trump’s gun rights.
It will be sad if he wins and it turns out that his critics are right when they posit that Trump’s guiding principle is “It’s all about me!” I am not a Trump fan at all, but I hope his vision is larger than himself. If I believe what he says, then clearly he does.
But I do not believe what he says.
