WASHINGTON -- Marines are prepositioning battle tanks, artillery and logistics equipment inside Norwegian caves as the U.S. pushes to station equipment near the NATO-Russia frontier.
"Any gear that is forward-deployed both reduces cost and speeds up our ability to support operations in crisis, so we're able to fall in on gear that is ready-to-go and respond to whatever that crisis may be," Col. William Bentley, operations officer for the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, said in a statement Friday on the Norwegian deployment that called the caves classified.

About ‘76 I was stationed in Hawaii ( 1st Marine Brigade) and one day I was assigned a small team to inventory small arms being stored in a cave within the navy ammunition depot. While we were working away checking serial numbers and repacking a bunch of .45s (all Union Signal and Switch), I saw a door at the end of the tunnel. Out of curiosity, we fiddled with the door and eventually got it open and discovered that the tunnel went much further into the hillside and was filled with perfectly preserved pre-1942 web gear, bayonets, tools, ponchos, leggings, and several really early M-1s, Remington shotguns, and a couple of .22 training rifles.
It had been sitting there sort of like a time capsule!
I didn’t get to keep any of it.
In addition to all the billions in equipment we’ve let fall into ISIS hands, and left in every Hellholistan we’ve invaded now we’re going to spread the rest of it out? FUNdemental transformation, oh yeah.
