Iâm done. Until the fundamental dynamic of the GOP primary race changes, Iâm done with parsing debate winners and losers. So long as Donald Trump dominates an overly-large field of ambitious, fratricidal competitors, we will continue to see absurdities like the following:
1. Trump â the Republican front-runner, no less â borrowing language from MoveOn.org and Daily Kos to advance the absurd âBush lied, people diedâ Iraq War narrative, attacking his fellow Republicans with far more fury than even Hillary Clinton can muster.
2. Trump repeatedly and loudly holding George Bush responsible for 9/11 and the fall of the World Trade Center.
3. An extended GOP defense of Obamacareâs Medicaid expansion, courtesy of Ohioâs extraordinarily sanctimonious John Kasich. Using talking points that Democrats would envy, he cloaked his embrace of an inferior, third-class government insurance program in the language of compassion and fiscal responsibility. In an ordinary race, Kasich would be long gone â shoved aside by genuine conservatives and an afterthought even in moderate New Hampshire.
4. Trump (yes, him again) actually extolling the virtues of Planned Parenthood on a GOP debate stage. As a businessman who built a âworld-class company,â surely he understands that injecting hundreds of millions of dollars into a business helps the entire enterprise stay afloat. Thatâs what taxpayer subsidies for Planned Parenthood do for the nationâs largest abortion provider, even if taxpayer dollars donât âdirectlyâ subsidize abortion.
5. An actual presidential candidate acting like an angry drunk â interrupting candidates, calling them names, and creating a social dynamic where the other GOP candidates either ignore him â and look weak â or engage him and risk lowering themselves to his shouting and name-calling level.
pretty well describes my feelings watching it as well.
Mine too.
You should've seen her destroying that server in the Cruz ad.
National Review......I’m done.
Tell Frenchy to unbunch his panties.
Trump won.
Now I’m the general election he can’t be attacked for George W’s record- a record that cost us be last two elections.
The butthurt is strong with this one.
“National Review”, purveyors of Fine TDS!
Yes, I do not trust anything they put out anymore.
CGato
I assume that means that you cannot refute the points made in the article.
Hmmm. Yes. Butthurt you are.
Trump is now playing to general election voters. At this point, the nomination is his and he did nothing last night to change that.
The GOP debates are also seeing less of an audience. This is because most conservatives have made up their minds and they are voting for Donald Trump.
Wasn’t it just after Iowa that NR were tooting their own horn about the devastating effect of their ‘Against Trump’ issue?
Where’s all their bravado gone?
Yoda wouldn't have said that . . . he would've said, "With this one, butthurt is strong." ;)
Trump acted like a drunk and said nothing coherent.
The debate was a mess. The high point was Cruz schooling the idiot commentator about SCOTUS. Apparently the idiot news reader didn’t know Cruz worked there.
If NH and IA proved anything at all, it was that few, if anyone, reads or pays any attention to NR. It will be the same in SC. All the “conservatives” at the NR, the Standard Weakling, and others, ever conserve is their own incomes, and privileged status at select cocktail parties. With them at the helm we have seen our country inch closer and closer to the status of a 3rd World dung-heap, and our popular “culture” become more and more coarse and vulgar. Can anyone tell me anything that any of these pontificating do nothings have ever “conserved”?
David French, your article is a total rimfire.
Trump played them and won.
The rude, adolescent Jeb! crowd booing Trump at every turn helped Trump even more.
Since it’s National Review, I take it Cruz didn’t blow everyone away?
But I will agree it was a complete farce. I hope this is the LAST of these shows. Get on with the voting!
And the same lie that Cruz uses.
