Trump’s America
WSJ ^ | 13 Feb 2016 | Charles Murray

Posted on 02/13/2016 6:06:05 AM PST by Theoria

There's nothing irrational about Donald Trump's appeal to the white working class, writes Charles Murray: they have every reason to be angry

If you are dismayed by Trumpism, don't kid yourself that it will fade away if Donald Trump fails to win the Republican nomination. Trumpism is an expression of the legitimate anger that many Americans feel about the course that the country has taken, and its appearance was predictable. It is the endgame of a process that has been going on for a half-century: America's divestment of its historic national identity.

For the eminent political scientist Samuel Huntington, writing in his last book, "Who Are We?" (2004), two components of that national identity stand out. One is our Anglo-Protestant heritage, which has inevitably faded in an America that is now home to many cultural and religious traditions. The other is the very idea of America, something unique to us. As the historian Richard Hofstadter once said, "It has been our fate as a nation not to have ideologies but to be one."

What does this ideology--Huntington called it the "American creed"--consist of? Its three core values may be summarized as egalitarianism, liberty and individualism. From these flow other familiar aspects of the national creed that observers have long identified: equality before the law, equality of opportunity, freedom of speech and association, self-reliance, limited government, free-market economics, decentralized and devolved political authority.

As recently as 1960, the creed was our national consensus. Running that year for the Democratic nomination, candidates like John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Hubert Humphrey genuinely embraced the creed, differing from Republicans only in how its elements should be realized.

Today, the creed has lost its authority and its substance. What happened?

The elite have known for decades that Americans do not want open borders and they ignored us and did it anyway. We get to live like foreigners in our own land.

They allowed the Left to take the cultural drivers seat and create tribalism to replace American unity and common values, ethics and morals. They name us foreigners in our own land.

They slutted up the joint and the jobs they did not ship out of our country, they gave to foreigners on visas. They gave preference to foreign students over American students in our Universities.

They kiss muslim butt; the dirtiest butts in the Universe. They impose the mental illness of Islam on us and we don’t want anything to do with it. It’s ugly. It’s nasty.

The elite no longer see themselves as having the duty to be loyal to America and Americans. They look at themselves as citizens of the world and they don’t like and are disloyal to America and Americans. They no longer respect the constitution nor our way of life and being. Now we feel the same way about them. Git a rope!

The takeaway -—

Our vaunted liberty is now constrained by thousands of petty restrictions that touch almost anything we want to do, individualism is routinely ignored in favor of group rights, and we have acquired an arrogant upper class. Operationally as well as ideologically, the American creed is shattered.

Or, you can sit benched on the sidelines, glowing in your ideological purity, while the other team wins the Super Bowl.

“What happened

**********************************

Ted Kennedy’s 1965 Immigration Act followed by Ted Kennedy’s 1986 amnesty for illegal aliens. Followed by no enforcement.

The federal government, with the cooperation of BOTH parties, have flooded the country with foreigners to dilute the voting power of real Americans.”

Here’s why immigration should be the single most important issue on the mind of anyone deciding whom to vote for in the upcoming election.

I think it’s safe to say that everyone on this forum would agree that California is a mess. Such a mess that it could conceivably bring itself and perhaps the entire country down if things don’t change.

Well, how do you suppose it got that way? I’ll tell you, as one who’s lived here since 1961, it’s because the state is now completely owned and operated by the democrat party.

As if that weren’t bad enough, think of how fast every democrat that isn’t Loony Left is being shoved out of the way and replaced by one that is. This post is already too long to start posting specific examples so you’ll have to take my word for it, it’s not getting better here.

It wasn’t always this way. We used to elect Republicans here. Ronald Reagan was a Governor here. Even as late as 1994, we passed prop 187, a law forbidding paying benefits to illegal aliens, which the courts overturned. But at least we tried.

California has pretty much been under the complete control of democrats since. DO NOT BELIEVE the GOPe when they tell you that hispanics have conservative values and can be converted to vote republican. If that were true, why has California gone the way it has?

This may not be a popular thing to say, but there is a concerted effort on the part of democrats and the Left to make white people the minority in this country. More white people, no matter their income or education level tend to vote republican and democrats have a lot harder time winning elections without the minority vote.

The most sure fire way for the dem’s to gain complete control of the political system is to import enough people of color to dilute the white vote out of the majority population of America.

Let’s recap. So far, the dem’s pretty much have the black vote sewed up. Ditto with the hispanic vote. Now on top of everything else, they’ve found a new voting bloc to pander to, muslims.

Between abortions and killing each other, the black population is pretty much static, but the hispanics and muslims are prolific breeders and it won’t take that long for their numbers to grow exponentially.

The bottom line to all this is, I believe our best chance in the upcoming election to get rid of the most people who don’t belong here is to elect Donald Trump to the presidency. If it weren’t for him bringing it up, the only conversation any of the candidates would be having would be how under what conditions the illegals could stay. None of them would have suggested making them leave.

If we don’t drastically reduce the number of people of color who have come here, mostly illegally, the democrats will become so strong that republicans will never win an election again.

If you think it will take a long time for that to happen, let me leave you with this article from the Sacramento Bee.

JUNE 30, 2015 7:22 PM
Census: Hispanics overtake whites to become California’s largest ethnic group

It’s official: Hispanics are now the largest ethnic group in California.

About 15 million Hispanics lived in California on July 1, 2014, compared to roughly 14.9 million non-Hispanic whites, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates released late last week. The California Department of Finance predicted in 2013 that Hispanics would outnumber whites in 2014; the census figures confirm that prediction.

The new data represents a historic shift over a short period of time. California has six times as many Hispanics today as it did in 1970. The number of non-Hispanic whites in the state has declined since 1970.

Hard working people of ALL races ought to be sick and tired of the expansion of the federal government and the welfare state.

Seriously.

Around me at my job are Hispanics, blacks, a few Asians and whites. MANY OF THEM supported Obama but are now SICK of the way things are going.

The “bubbling under” anger at the feds—whether it is voiced as anger at Obama or not—is being ignored by the media and the political punditry.

May it blast loud and clear on election day.

You’re not the only one. I support Donald Trump and will vote for him in the primary. Truth be told, I would much rather stay home than support anyone: I detest voting with a passion. I think it a fools game. Worse, voting makes you complicit with intrigues of the ruling class. That is to say it makes you complicit with evil incarnate.

Unfortunately these aren’t normal times. My support can be summarized in a tagline I used a couple months back: I support Donald Trump because I prefer him to civil war.

Here is a big plus about DT: with him as President you probably won’t have a second civil war. My personal reservations about TC aside, he simply doesn’t have the charisma or ability to think on his feet necessary to avoid the catastrophe.

Conservatism as we know it is pretty much dead. It doesn’t have the ability it once did to unify folks, and there is a large and growing contingent of folks who not only oppose it, they absolutely view it as evil. They are never, ever going to be convinced.

A lot of folks here tend to scoff at Bernie Sanders. As my sitehandle indicates, I know a thing or two about rats. I was one until about 2007. Here’s the thing: Bernie appeals greatly to the 47% or more that willard infamously identified. His supporters are passionate, smart, and relatively young. They will give 110% to elect their candidate. And he will most likely be the rat candidate.

While we sit here arguing about who is the most pure conservative candidate, the opposition is busy unifying their FSA. And each one of them has the same number of votes that we have: one. Assuming they don’t cheat. Which they likely will.

Young skulls full of mush who are convinced that Socialism will work this time.

Oh well, the good news is that they'll see once and for all it doesn't work, but it seems like every other generation has to learn the same lessons the hard way.

Thanks for that you provided for Trump's position on the issues. It said this:

"I am a conservative on most issues but a liberal on health. It is an unacceptable but accurate fact that the number of uninsured Americans has risen to 42 million. Working out detailed plans will take time. But the goal should be clear: Our people are our greatest asset. We must take care of our own. We must have universal healthcare."

Again, that is a direct quote from Trump, from the link you provided in your post. And I do not support that, and will not for a candidate who does.

No. These people are True Believers and no amount of objective evidence will sway them from the belief that what they’re doing “works.” Even if they have to walk over starving people to get to their daily shouting and group validation session.

” Worse, voting makes you complicit with intrigues of the ruling class. That is to say it makes you complicit with evil incarnate.”

A long time friend of mine, Billy Beck, explains why he does not vote:

An essential reason is that these matters are at their root about moral principles, and I say it’s immoral to subject those to popular opinion.

Trump’s America....illegal aliens all gone with their anchor babies, industry and jobs returning, American military great again, Veterans honored and given the best, the media huddled into a frightened mass, Democrats waiting for a chance in 2024, ISIS is history and Hilliary and Obama are wearing orange coveralls.

What Trump wants to do is do health care like Auto Insurance, if you can get better health care from a company in Texas, and you live in Idaho, then you will be able to cross state lines, which you can not do now, so the insurance people have to compete with better prices on policies...

I have auto insurance in Wisconsin and I live in Utah...a lot cheaper there than it is here...

Cruz isn’t eligible, but even IF he were, he lacks financial knowledge, is a poor judge of people, and his tax plan is an abomination.

Thanks for that. Yes, there is a strong moral case to be made against voting. I usually take the practical argument somewhat combined with the moral one as I believe one compliments the other. To paraphrase Thoreau: voting for the right is doing nothing for it.

The good news is that this is likely to be either the last or next to last ballot for me. Thanks be to God!
