Florida Sen. Marco Rubio said one his GOP rivals isn't telling the whole truth about his record standing up for American firms against the Chinese.
"Ted Cruz was counsel on record for a Chinese company that stole an invention from an American inventor in Florida," Rubio said. "Here you have someone who goes around talking tough about China, but he leaves out the fact that when China stole an American inventor's product, he stood with the Chinese."
"That is a fact," Rubio said.
We decided to check it out.
The case
The case in question involved a man named Jordan Fishman, the CEO of Alpha Mining Systems, a Florida-based specialty tire company.
In 2009, he sued a Chinese tire manufacturer, Shandong Linglong Rubber Co., in U.S. District Court, in Virginia, accusing them of stealing blueprints and violating his copyright.
Fishman won the suit and was awarded $26 million in damages in 2010, according to federal court records.
But the Chinese company appealed and hired the Washington D.C. law firm Morgan, Lewis and Bockius, where Cruz was a partner.
Federal court records list R. Ted Cruz as one of the lawyers representing the Chinese firm.

So he did use his birth name a bit more as an attorney than as a Presidential candidate ... interesting. I wonder what changed.
A junior associate on a case he wa assigned ?
That’s all they have? Didn’t work for abbot either.
But...but...but I thought St. Canuck was the messiah - and now he’s being exposed for protecting ChiComs and multi-million dollar fund raising in a Manhattan (NYvalues) home of a homosexual couple?
Oh my!
Cruz was the top lawyer in this case, as Rubio implies? Or just listed as one of the attorneys, as the rest of the article states?
Cruz is all smoke and mirrors.
Yeah that’s what lawyers do. They defend one group against the other. Now he is a senator. Has he done the defending since he became senator?
What a scandal, sure to bring him crashing down. ...NOT.
Is he ashamed of his birth name ?
Not everything is Breaking News
Wow, as an attorney, Cruz assisted on a case as directed by his employers. How HORRIBLE!
Pathetic. Looks like the Rubio campaign AND the Trumpkins are getting desperate. As a junior partner, you don’t usually get to choose what cases you work, and as an attorney, you often represent clients with whom you disagree.
Yeah, the guy who ran against Ted for the Senate seat tried this one, and it proved to be marginally true at best. Sort of like Ted was not really a big player in the case. There are so many things wrong with Ted that are totally true. No need to stretch, as Marco obviously is. A pox on both their houses! GO Trump!
I think you mean David Dewhurst. He filled the radio with ads touting this, and lost badly to Cruz.
I don’t judge people by their customers or clients. If a Chinese company has beef with an American one, they can sue like anyone else. I haven’t seen any indication that this was anything but a simple dispute between businesses. Something courts across the nation handle hundreds of times a day.
In a sense yes, he views the people of Texas as his current client, and he has done what they asked.
He was a junior associate who was assigned to the case. Rubio reaching for straws I see.
“Is he ashamed of his birth name ?”
Yeah, anyone who goes by a nickname they’ve had most of their life is ashamed of their birth name. You’re reaching just a bit, don’t you think?
Lawyer involved in lawsuit-Film at 11.
I wonder if Ben Carson operated on any Chinese people?
!
That's silly.
His father is named Rafael, so I can easily see his family calling him Ted, the nickname for Edward.
