If you've got a reputation for speaking figuratively, for not literally meaning what you say, you could get away with saying that Jimmy Carter "endorsed" Donald Trump.

If you're presenting yourself as an honest truth-teller and make a statement like that without an indication that it's not literally true, you'll get in trouble -- and deserve it.

For example, the British tabloids presented Carter's comments as an endorsement of Trump, but everybody knows they don't aim at 100% accuracy. If you've got a reputation to lose, you've got to be more careful.
