The ultra large container ship CSCL Indian Ocean grounded in Elbe river near Grunendeich. The ship was en route from Felixtowe to Hamburg at low water, while having draft of 11.50 m. The vessel got black out, losing propulsion power, which caused hitting a mud shallow and hardly grouding. The traffic on Elbe river is hampered, as large part of the shipping channel is closed by the container carrier. At the scene of the accident were dispatched 7 tugs, which should tow the ultra large container ship CSCL Indian Ocean to safe depth at high tide. The local authorities described the situation as critical and alternatively dredgers may be used to remove silt from alongside the vessel and deepen the channel so that the ship can be refloated

The vessel grounded at around 22:00hrs last night, which is believed to be due to power failure. On Wednesday night, the ship’s captain informed the Brunsbuttel Vessel Traffic Centre that the steering gear had failed. According to preliminary information, the ship has no breaches and underwater damages, but salvage operations should be careful. At the scene of the accident were dispatched five tugs, but refloating will be done after full inspection and survey. During the accident there were no injured people and no water pollution.

The container ship CSCL Indian Ocean (IMO: 9695157) has overall length of 400.00 m, moulded beam of 59.00 m and maximum draft of 12.50 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 155,200 DWT and the gross tonnage is 187,541 GRT. The vessel was built in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea and managed by China Shipping Container Lines.

Seem to be a lot of power failures lately. How long to restart these giant diesels when they go down?

Wasn’t there another container ship grounded just a week ago? Don’t recall where. Was over on its side and a salvage co. called in.

I was on the water in Charleston Harbor a couple years back, between the Yorktown and the Ravenell Bridge when one of these things came in. It dwarfed the Yorktown and as it passed all I could think of was the opening scene to Star Wars Episode IV with the Star Destroyer ...

5 tugs...7 tugs. What difference does it make?

Sail at low water...surprise, surprise they are aground.
