In the 2016 presidential race, conservatives have split into two camps: Donald Trump or Ted Cruz. Supporters snipe from both sides arguing who's liberal or conservative, independent or owned by special interests, pro-amnesty, personally acquainted with God, whatever. Slurs, insults, and innuendos pepper the airwaves as confetti fills the skies over Times Square on New Year's Eve.
As for me, I'm in the Trump camp. At one time, I was for Cruz, but no more. Ted came into the primaries touting his reputation as a fearless fighter, the guy who stands up to the Washington "cartel." Yet his strategy for 99% of the Republican primaries has been to draft Trump – to let The Donald buck the headwinds while Ted reclines in the sweet spot.
In fact, for most of the primary season, Cruz seemingly admired Trump. He showed Trump respect, agreed with everything Trump said, and took the high ground when it came to infighting. Rumors of a bromance between Trump and Cruz flew due to their open friendship.
That was then.
Now, a couple of weeks before Iowa's up, Ted finally pokes his head out. Cruz no longer "respects" Trump and is no longer worried about taking the high ground. Ted wants the nomination, and now that he's safely bypassed the heavy artillery, he's ready to fight for it.

We’ll see the first portend of things that may come tonight I guess. Actually, I don’t think I’d be disappointed if the outcome is Cruz or Trump. Either way, I’ll be happy as long as it can kill off Rubio, Kasich and Jeb’s chances any quicker.
Drafting is a smart strategy in wheeled racing, distance running, and politics. Trump, with his super-sized personality and ego, has sucked up most of the ‘Pub oxygen and media coverage. Cruz was smart to take advantage, even if the contest eventually goes to The Donald.
I think that Cruz has left out the plays that could of gotten the most yardage out of his playbook.
I think if Cruz was the debater he is supposed to be, we would have a better idea (vis a vis Cruz’s questions and Trumps answers) where Trump truly stands on abortion, homosexual rights, Supreme court, role of gov in our lives,etc.
Cruz has failed here and it could cost us all.

My problem with Trump is that I'm concerned he may be scoring touchdowns for the wrong team.
I have a strong conservative friend who is really worried about Trump getting elected. He just said that if it comes down to Trump and Sanders, he'd vote Sanders because he knows that Republicans in Congress would fight the guy. If Trump wins, he's concerned that Republican resistance to his big-government ideas would be minimal.
I don't go that far personally, but I get the concern.

One thing I think both Trump and Cruz supporters can agree on, if not for Donald Trump we would be hearing endless arguments over whether Jebs flavor of aamnesty is better than Rubios, or Pauls. Trump has defined the debate and set the priorities very differently than they would have been otherwise, and I hope he is successful.
Not-so-interesting analogy. Trump is George Wallace and Ross Perot put together. One helped the GOP the other hurt. All 3 have big mouths. Is that what we need. Having the whako left in charge of the Dems we(sad to say) need a bitch-slapper out front.

Cruz is a very good debater in a classical debate, but Presidential debates are not classical debates but opportunities to close a sale...and Ted is not a very good salesman.

I am a Cruz guy. I can tell you however that Rubio will go very deep in the race.
Cruz has Coach Beck on the sideline.
Trump has Coach Palin.

Agree. I thank Trump for re-introducing some previously PC banned words like “illegal” into the national lexicon. I also thank him for laser-focusing on a potential dire problem we may have with Muslim refugees and some immigrants.
Neither of these two good things (IMO) would have happened without him on the scene and I believe that Cruz would be confronted (alone) with the very much increased chances of an invigorated Jeb Bush, possibly a backup (amnesty snake) Rubio as the players in a final battle that could have Cruz scrambling to defend the natural born citizen requirement above all else.
What time do we hear from Iowa?
