The Washington Post has a very in-depth report tonight about his role in the bankruptcy of his Taj Mahal Atlantic City casino back in 1991. They concluded that Trump has repeatedly “play[ed] down his personal role” in its downfall.
And Trump responded by warning the paper he might sue them.
The Post––which chronicles Trump’s history in the casino business––obtained documents showing plenty of the people he interacted with at the time were very bitter because of unfulfilled promises.
At one point, the report features Trump’s testimony before the Casino Control Commission years before, in which he argued to get a casino license. He said at one point, “It’s easier to finance if Donald Trump owns it. With me, they know there’s a certainty they would get their interest.”
And when asked if anything could go wrong, Trump mused, “We can have a depression. The world could collapse. We could have World War III. I mean, a lot of things can go wrong. I don’t think they will.”
The Taj opened in 1990, but in July 1991 the casino filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. And Trump had reportedly described himself as the “sole shareholder.”
Trump defended himself in a recent interview with WaPo, saying that his casinos were not the only ones that suffered at that time, and things got, well, very Trump-ian at one point:
He said the bankruptcy was the result of external forces beyond his control, specifically an extremely bad economy in 1990. He said he had “the prerogative” to change his mind about using junk bonds in the financing.
“I didn’t want to have any personal liability, so I used junk bonds. I accept the blame for that, but I would do it again,” he said. But Trump vehemently denied that the deal represented a personal failing or affected his personal wealth.
“This was not personal. This was a corporate deal,” he said. “If you write this one, I’m suing you.”

I have know problem with Trump being aggressive in pursuit of his legal business dealings. He is a leader a fighter and a winner. This is what we need right now.
The art of the deal:
1. Make a bad deal
2. File. Bankruptcy
3. Threaten to sue anyone who writes about it
If this old news is all they have to hitTrump with pretty weak.
Just imagine that bully with the full force of the US Just-Us Department behind him doing his dirty deeds. It won’t be “you’re fired.” It will be “ruin their lives”. “Arrest them”, “throw the bum in Jail”.
His Administration will be no different than Barkies. Litigate the Public into submission or investigate them into bankruptcy.
No One dare challenge the All Powerful Don.

Think of President Trump threatening to sue while backed up by the power of the IRS.

Have you ever looked up his charitable contributions? You should do so and prepare to be amazingly underwhelmed.
Why do you presume those are the only two choices?
When someone using their “newspaper” to attempt to harm you with fraudulent reporting, of course you tell them “I am going to sue you”.
If the Newspaper is sure of their facts, and not doing the standard sloppy drive by hit piece, they have nothing to fear of Trump. If the facts are really on their side, what is the Wash Po afraid of?
The Donald, the Oligarch Maximus for whom the deals mean utilizing your back pocket politicians and your corporate lawyers and accountants.
Not to worry, though, for the Donald will make America great again with his tweets, fully leveraging his friend Putin, and applying the Best Book Ever Written(after the Bible, of course).
Public figures do not have the liability protections private people do. This is well established already. Others can dig into all manner of things in your past and insinuate all manner of things from it.
The same system that protects him while talking about Cruz’s birth, birthplace and birth certificate protects people who want to talk about bankruptcies and business ventures.
It’s not as old as Cruz’s birth.

That is one very difficult hurdle for a political candidate to surpass.
They were basically told to shut up unless they could put up.
I don't see a problem with that.

Choice 3: Lament at how the press is ignoring the issues important to Americans, and hope that they feel some sort of shame.
