The Florida Department of Health on Tuesday confirmed that three people â two of whom are in Miami-Dade County âcontracted the mosquito-borne Zika virus while visiting South America.
The virus, which may cause a fever, rash, joint pain, conjunctivitis and could be dangerous for pregnant women or women of childbearing age, is quickly spreading through South America, Central America and the Caribbean....

yeah “visitors”. I spend a lot of time in Colombia and this seems to be spreading along the Venezuela border and to the south..from dry desert to the jungles. Higher elevations seem to be safe at this point. The Caribbean areas seem to be the hot spots. Id bet the spread here is due to the southern border.
This is very likely to spread to US mosquitoes.
Thanks, Obama!
The next thing the Left will say is the Zika virus is the result of man made global warming.
Where do you see that it was immigrants or visitors? The article says that the people who contracted the virus had visited South America themselves.
This is very likely to spread to US mosquitoes.
The fl dept of health is full of it. A friend of mine caught it from family visiting from Venezuela over Christmas. She was weekend from surgery and was in and out the hospital for weeks.
News reports as of yesterday said the reported cases were in people who have visited the Caribbean and South or Central America, and cautioned women going there about the effects it has on the preborn.
It stands to reason that if those who take a vacation to those areas can get the infection that invaders, often arriving in less sanitary conditions and with less medical care will bring it with them.
You know what? If I were a pregnant woman in an area where the virus prevails, I would get myself to the US ASAP and stay!
Global warming? Some will blame it. How about getting to the real problem?
That would be that national borders aren't enforced. It's a miracle that, globally, there hasn't already been a pandemic.
All it takes is for a few mosquitos to get infected, and the virus can spread in the US.
Local news reporting this virus is from 14 countries....
I understood that one person was recently in Venezuela and another was in Colombia. Those are not common sources for illegals as of late.
Not really, have you heard of any outbreaks of malaria?
Malaria used to be endemic in the US. The mosquitoes that carry it are still here. It took a huge effort to stamp out malaria, and it could return without the efforts of the CDC and state health departments to contain every case that enters the country.
