HALEIWA, Hawaii (AP) -- A retiree who lives across the street from a Hawaii beach said she heard two booms that were loud enough to shake her house on the night two Marine Corps helicopters crashed off the island of Oahu.
"I threw my blanket off, put my slippers on and ran outside thinking it was a car accident," Elaray Navarro said.
The Coast Guard was notified late Thursday of the crash by another civilian who saw the aircraft flying then disappear and a fireball. Someone else reported a flare in the sky, Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Scott Carr said.

Why didn't the Marines IMMEDIATELY notify the Coast Guard...????
The guys in the helos probably never got a word off. And they were likely not under positive air traffic control at their altitude. The were away from base, low doing tactical training. The USMC wouldn’t know the instant it happened.
That’s just how it is. There isn’t someone at base, watching their every move on a TV screen like in Hollywood.
Obama’s Ninja Frogmen have gotten shoulder-fired missiles.
And the debris landed right on Fuddy’s floating nasty corpse.
It really sounds odd to me.
Since two disappeared, it probably was just like they said, a collision.
On the other hand, two really big explosions sounds like it could have been an attack with anti aircraft missiles.
Sounds like they collided- boom... then hit the water... boom.
Boomer...rang?

Not that odd. Minor rotor contact followed by immediate loss of control, disintegration, and two -very large- aircraft impacting the water.

LOL. You have a long memory.
Luckily for me, we were coming to a hover only a few feet obove ground and did not have far to fall.
Yep, no screen to watch, just a couple of birds that were overdue, called in by the Operations duty officer for the squadron, after notifying the Group and the Wing. Been there seen it.
No, he has an enduring hatred and mission.

Low level, over the ocean? With what AA system? Training has its costs.
Yessir. Dangerous and not nearly as monitored and watched as people think. Someone seeing off their patio calling 911, or another aircraft nearby who sees it will always be fastest, by far.
God bless those men.
Good lord. Glad you made it.
Saw two slicks do the exact same thing in Jan
`71 Quang Tri.They came down easily enough,but
the rotors went to pieces all around us after contact.
Was suprised to see how light the rotors are.
Like a honeycomb.
That was when I ran and got caught in concertina.
Huey blades aren’t light, when they disintegrate the pieces can be. You were better off in the concertina, lots of heavier things flying around.
Wow. Glad you made it out. My estranged brother is a heli pilot. Not a day goes by I don’t worry for him, tho.
