No Movement That Embraces Trump Can Call Itself Conservative
National Review ^ | September 5, 2015 | Jonah Goldberg

Posted on 01/15/2016 9:09:41 PM PST by TBP

I’m at a total loss to understand why serious pro-lifers take him at his word. He’s been all over the place on Planned Parenthood, and when asked who he’d like to put on the Supreme Court, he named his pro-choice-extremist sister.

[I]n the last month, Trump has contemplated a flat tax, the fair tax, maintaining the current progressive tax system, a carried-interest tax, a wealth tax, and doing nothing. His fans respond, “That shows he’s a pragmatist!”

No. It shows that he has absolutely no ideological guardrails whatsoever. Ronald Reagan once said, “Government is like a baby. An alimentary canal with a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other.” Trump is close to the reverse. He’s a mouth at the wrong end of an alimentary canal spewing crap with no sense of responsibility.

In his embarrassing interview with Hugh Hewitt Thursday night, Trump revealed he knows less than most halfway-decent D.C. interns about foreign policy. Twitter lit up with responses about how it doesn’t matter and how it was a gotcha interview. They think that Trump’s claim that he’ll just go find a Douglas MacArthur to fix the problem is brilliant. Well, I’m all in favor of finding a Douglas MacArthur, but if you don’t know anything about foreign policy, the interview process will be a complete disaster. Yes, Reagan delegated. But he knew enough to know to whom to delegate.

[F]or the last five years no issue has united the Right more than opposition to Obamacare. Opposition to socialized medicine in general has been a core tenet of American conservatism from Day One. Yet, when Republicans were told that Donald Trump favors single-payer health care, support for single-payer health care jumped from 16 percent to 44 percent.

Do we stand for principles or just hitting the other guys angrily?

the leate Howard Phillips of the Conservative Caucus used to remind us that "pragmatism doesn't work." Yet we are supposed to support a guy with no fixed principles because he's a pragmatist dealmaker who is [supposedly] against the people we don't like.

Sorry, I stand with conservatism and the Constitution. I guess that must make me GOPe, huh?

Let's ask Barry Goldwater.

Oh, Good God, TBP.

You've learned nothing about The Media DeathStar in all your years here.

Pathetic.

I’m not looking for purity.

I’m looking for someone who won’t play the Uniparty Game in Washington. Trump is no one’s patsy.

Lincoln or Teddy Roosevelt come back from the grave couldn’t have beat LBJ 11 months after the Kennedy assassination. Nice try, though.

One man’s ideological guardrail is another man’s blinkers.
If we keep on doing what we’ve been doing, we’ll keep on getting what we’ve been getting. Jonah’s the kind of guy who’ll vote for Jeb Bush, and then bitch about it for four years.

Why would it matter if he was a Conservative or not. The only thing that matters is he closes the borders and scares the illegals the hell out.

Besides that, why would Pro-Lifers worry about it. Most of the rabid Leftists, true activists and quislings on the court where appointed by supposed Conservative Republicans.

Not much a president can do about abortion and the court appointments are a crap shoot anyway.

Jonah may have overstated the case, and his view of conservatism and mine may not be the same, but the gist of his argument is worth considering.

I’ve enjoyed the Trump ride and the angst that he has caused to the dreaded GOP-e. But I’m not comfortable with him as our nominee. I’ve been burned too many times. I just want a proven conservative.

My tagline still applies.

Digging up a five month old article to find a Trump hit piece is just pathetic.

So you must be voting for Cruz then - Because the only thing that will save this country is Conservatism.

Yep, how many winning Presidential candidates have we nominated lately? As dire as the condition of our country is right now, I would vote for a goat with an "R" behind its name if I thought it might lead to the rejection of Obama's executive orders and a right-leaning judiciary down the road. What about losing don't the Republicans and their DC-based, elitist pundits get?

When told that no candidate was perfect enough to be worthy of a conservative's vote, the questioner replied, "Well, Jesus isn't on the ballot this year. Who's your SECOND choice?"
