They were ordered to stand down and surrender. With all that firepower they had enough to sink the whole Iranian ‘navy’!
Rules of engagement. Not allowed to fire those expensive weapons without permission and no radio contact. Although, rumor has it, the administration asked for Iran’s help in finding them.
......this is just my speculation but I think one boat lost power and the other hung around to help. My thousands of hours of operating small boats on the seas tells me that the best maintained boats and even NEW boats will just go south of you at any moment. You just can’t EVER tell when.
I don’t blame the young lieutenant for what he said if coercion was used against him or they told him they would kill one of his crew if he didn’t say what the bastards wanted him to say. All of us who have sons about his age will agree, I’m sure.
If I were looking to cast blame south of Obama and Jarrett, I would start with WHY was he where he was? Was he in fact in Iranian waters or is that BS and Obama/Kerry/Jarrett are backing the Iranian version? How many hours was he there? If several, why didn’t he get at least some air cover. Or did Obama order that assistance to stand down too so his Iranian buddies wouldn’t get hurt.

I’ve been there - it was long ago, but their tactics haven’t changed much I’m sure. It is possible - even probable - that there were more than three Boston Whalers (which is the IRGC’s favorite craft to modify) involved. They take the boats and put mounts for all sorts of weapons on them including missiles and rocket launchers... And they prefer to attack in “swarms” with large numbers of the highly-modifed craft.
My questions are: How do you get that far off course on a trip from Kuwait to Bahrain? You’d have to be WAY off course to find yourself even *near* the Iranian Exclusion Zone. And how do you let a swarm of small boats sneak up on you without issuing calls for help over both encrypted and channel 16 on bridge-to-bridge?
To then allow them to take the boats without skuttling comms, crypto, nav, and weapons systems - followed by apologizing to their interrogator?
