WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Pentagon says it briefly lost contact with two small Navy craft in the Persian Gulf on Tuesday but has received assurances from Iran that the crew and vessels will be returned safely and promptly.
Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook tells The Associated Press that the boats were moving between Kuwait and Bahrain when the US lost contact with them.
Cook says, "We have been in contact with Iran and have received assurances that the crew and the vessels will be returned promptly."

Fars: American boats were armed with 3 heavy guns, patrolled about 2 km inside #Iran’s territorial waters before being detained.
Make that 1 year, 1 week and 1 day until the swearing in ceremony and we can cheer him and wide load leaving out the back door past the trash.
instead of being detained, why didn’t they immediately call for help and start blasting away/

This is either a major screw-up by the vessel Captain(s) or there is much more to this story. I suspect the latter because one vessel should have been able to take the other in tow until a larger vessel arrived to take over.
Perfect timing for the last State of the Union, but my prayers are with the sailors involved.
If the details coming out are accurate, somebody screwed up very badly. No way this should have played out like it did.
Where are those boats? They should be aweigh by now.

Interesting the timing......and that Obama made no reference to this during his “farewell” address. Apparently Navy sailors and their two small boats (Riverine boats) were moving between Kuwait and Bahrain when the U.S. lost contact with them.....apparently they had mechanical problems and drifted into Iranina waters....???? When the U.S. lost contact with the boats, ships attached to the USS Harry S Truman aircraft carrier strike group began searching the area, along with aircraft flying off the Truman......Officials said a radio signal from one of the boats showed that they were on Farsi Island, setting off efforts to contact the Iranians. Boats don't contain any sensitive equipment, so there were no concerns about the Iranians gaining access to the crafts. They're being held overnight at an Iranian base on Farsi Island in the Persian Gulf,... expected to be transferred to a U.S. ship in the region on Wednesday morning local time. Officials said they believe the U.S. had spoken to one of the crew, and all 10 were fine and uninjured.
