Like many musicians, I hated his lifestyle and values (when he was younger) but loved his music.

My youngest son got an appreciation for his music in several outlets, one of the coolest (and ironic) ones as a remix of “Let’s Dance” in a car commercial a couple of years ago.

“It’s a wonder he lived this long.”

George Carlin lived longer than David Bowie did.

I doubt that.

Clearly, you do not understand how that works these days.

How would refer to them?

What is your definition of an artist? Is music “art?” Does it have a theme? Is a performance art?

Just because you are still pissed off that Glen Miller got shot down, please do not come on to the threads and say silly things.

“The musicians of the 60’s AND the 70’s ... were artistic and unique”

Great post. I agree. I hope that other replier to my post reads yours.

Now I gotta reply to him.

I’m a huge Pat Metheny fan, so imagine my shock when I heard “This Is Not America”, Pat didn’t even know who David was. But it’s IMHO it was his best vocal performance, ever.

“what is your definition of an artist”

How about the dictionary definition of art:

“the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance”

You see, it’s gotta be according to aesthetic principles. Otherwise it ain’t art.

You’ll not understand this but I have to try to get through to you for the sake of those that will end up reading future posts from you.

You don’t think his music has aesthetic qualities?

Have you listened to anything other than the disc crap?

“You don’t think his music has aesthetic qualities?”

Collectively speaking, the coarser pop entertainers have abilities (e.g. play their instruments) that rise to the level of being artistic. A few years ago, the media mouthpieces started calling them artists.

I’m old fashioned. I don’t consider a jar filled with urine and containing a statuette of Christ to be art, to have aesthetic qualities.

People will not agree with each other as to what is art, so let’s not overthink it.

Neither does anyone else on this board. What does that have to do with Bowie?

Stop thinking collectively and making collective judgments and you'll be better able to pick out the artists from the mere attention-seekers. This is a conservative forum. Collectivism doesn't go well here.

“Collectivism doesn’t go well here”

“Collective” has more than one definition, enlightened one.

I would never attempt to speak for all people on this board.

Cracks me up how the pop performers are now referred to as artists.

Personally I only consider them artists if they write their own songs, and he was one of the best there. Of course for someone like Bowie, his concepts for fashion and stage presentation were very artistic too.

“Personally I only consider them artists if they write their own songs, and he was one of the best there.”

Yes, Bowie was a creative genius, and I kind like him, but I can’t warm up much to entertainers who promote weird and immoral behavior, or maybe he just demonstrated it, not promoted it.

But strangeness, titillation, a touch of immorality — that’s the essence of entertainment. I like to think art rises above that.

His duet with Bing Crosby warmed my heart.
