Trump Denies He’d Put 45 Percent Tariff on Imported Goods from China...
Washington Free Beacon ^ | 1/10/16 | David Rutz

Republican frontrunner Donald Trump denied that he would impose a 45 percent tariff on Chinese goods coming into the United States as president, telling Fox News Sunday "I didn't say I would do it."

However, Trump told the New York Times this week he would "do a tax" on imported goods from China to restructure the relationship with the country, who he has constantly railed against on the campaign trail, and that it should be 45 percent:

"The only power that we have with China," Mr. Trump said, "is massive trade."

"I would tax China on products coming in," Mr. Trump said. "I would do a tariff, yes -- and they do it to us."

Mr. Trump added that he's "a free trader," but that "it's got to be reasonably fair."

"I would do a tax. and the tax, let me tell you what the tax should be ... the tax should be 45 percent," Mr. Trump said.

Fox News host Chris Wallace asked Trump about his proposal and wondered if such a high tariff would increase the prices for American consumers and further damage China's economy.

It’s Trump’s negotiating strategy: Big ask with the intention of getting something significant, but considerably less. I prefer Cruz, but this is just the GOPe enablers trying to help Jebbie and Marco.

It's Trump's negotiating strategy:

The underlying assumption (fact) being the gnat like attention span of the LIV's.

Since China does not believe in free markets and holds wages down for their slave workers, tariffs are good. Get the cost up to true market rate.

“It’s Trump’s negotiating strategy.”

This seems to be the go to talking point of every flip-flop Trump has ever made.

Considering that Trump is not presently negotiating, but rather campaigning, it does not hold water.

But so many Trump supporters were all for a 45% tariff on Chinese imports when their candidate was for it. Are they against it now that Trump “never said” he would do it?

It’s up to 45% if the Chinese don’t behave themselves.

He’s negotiating with the electorate. Trying to find how many half baked bytes he can keep in the air at one time.

It isn’t a talking point. It’s just Trump. Take it or leave it; it doesn’t matter to me.

For all you Cruz supporters, he didn’t whine about it being just a media question designed to trip him up, and refuse to answer it.

The ChiComs are destroying their own economy. They are doing it now. They are communists for cryin' out loud.

Under no circumstance should our Big Federal Government being taxing us 45% more.

The rest of the World puts a value added tax on home and imported goods. Hence we pay for their governments. The Libertarian free traders cry fowl whenever we put a tariff on imported goods. American workers and businesses have
to cover taxes and medical care in the goods sold home and abroad. A value added tariff would level the field.

This is the way that Trump avoids spending a large amount of his own money on his campaign. He makes ridiculous statements like his proposal of a 45 percent tariff on China in retaliation for unfair trade practices. Then, once he gets free media coverage, he walks back the proposal or denies that he ever made the statement at all. Just Trump being Trump.

The problem with the type of campaign that Trump is using is that the media coverage during the general campaign will not be so forgiving of his well documented flip-flopping. Will the media give him a free license to clarify his positions when the opponent is Hillary or Biden? I think not.

“Considering that Trump is not presently negotiating, but rather campaigning, it does not hold water.”

How do you know that other than it’s what you want to believe?

Trump could be pulling off his biggest DEAL of all.

Claiming he wants to be president when in fact he really wants someone else to be president.

With Trump you never know and that is exactly why I would never trust him.

Well. Should not a serious candidate be clear and consistent on what he is and is not proposing?

Somebody help me out here.
