Actually, a lot of them ARE ordinary folks. They just want to get by, and feed their families. Few illegals want to commit major crimes. Some do, most don’t. Many just work an honest job, and they are the “good,” the “productive” ones that trump talks about “expediting” back in. But about half go on welfare, and that’s why it’s vital to cut them off.
In terms of terrorism, I think of all the events the FBI prevents. It’s thousands.
And if we secure the border and get rid of a lot of the illegals we currently have, the FBI will fewer false hits in looking for terrorists, and the signal to noise ratio of the true hits will increase, leading to more successful preventions, and fewer events.
But fixing immigration might not help with San Bernadino or Chattanooga, sine the TN fellow and the SB husband were both born in the US, and thus not immigrants.
As for legal vs illegal employment, the way to fix that is thru enhanced everify and bigger employer penalties, which Sen. Cruz has proposed.
First, require all employment make use of everify to document eligibility. If you don’t use everify to document eligibility, you can’t deduct wages as part of your cost of generating revenue. And if you get caught employing an illegal, and you didn’t use everify, then they cart you off to prison.
There will still be a residual number of illegals, either with high quality forged documents,or where the everify database is imperfect, but the number might be in the tens of thousnds, or even the hundreds of thousands, rather tHan somewhere north of ten million as it is now.
As for private charity, there are ways to use tax law and everify to reduce the problem.
Again, I think the number of illegals committing major crimes is less than a million. But many of them commit DUI and related crimes, and right now, come into contact with law enforcement frequently. If we stop letting those folks go and deport them instead, the problem will dry up more quickly.
As for letting ANY back, I’m against it. Ever. They broke our law by being illegals. That’s enough for me to bar them from entry to our country forever.

1) Terminate the (illegal) welfare state
2) Return to a service oriented economy (pay to play. Schools, hospitals, etc.)
