The estimated jackpot for the next draw of the US Powerball Lottery has reached $500m (£342m).
No one has won the lottery's top prize since 4 November, meaning someone could lay claim to the sixth largest jackpot in North America on Wednesday night.
Soaring ticket sales have boosted the jackpot, which could climb even higher if the winning numbers remain elusive.

Yes. And the government reduces their budgets by the same amount they get from the lottery ... so there is no net gain.
That was a nice little bait and switch that duped the voting masses when California put the lottery initiative on the ballot.
Not that the school system needs more money ...they waste, steal and overstaff administration at the expense of students but that's another thread.
Yes, I bought some tickets. I don't want much in life - hell, I'd be thrilled with a couple mill in a trust and live just off the interest - but it would be a delight to get the financial monkey off my back, provide security for my family and friends and write big checks to my favorite charities. And then somehow find a way to give the rest away.
I bought 5 tickets. Think I could live on that. Heck even if I had to split it I could scrape by. Lol
The registered trust is filed as the winner.
What you say is truth.
Ten Bears speaks of living...I reckon it so....
FR...would probably love some of your winnings!!

Funny how you have some skin in the game....and decide it's not a tax on the poor and dumb.
I have no skin in the game. Zero. I do not gamble.
I USED to work for a gaming machine manufacturer - in the 90’s. After that I was hired away to work for a dot com - no gaming involved at all. That company was sold to Oracle...
NO person is required to buy a lottery ticket, hence, it cannot be a tax.
Your specious argument makes as much sense, logically, as Obama’s rant’s against the second amendment - you site the same vile, uninformed drivel in the same manner that the left does.
Do you really believe the poor are required to play the lottery?
Pot odds are better. Winning odds are the same.
We all can think of someone who has earned that.
Lotteries = tax on the poor = recirculation of your tax dollars back into the government stash
Forgot guns?
You said that....but then you said this????
I bought two lottery tickets today, as I stated earlier: Iâm not poor. Iâm getting more than $4.00 worth of benefit by having two (albeit almost worthless) tickets. My wife smiled when I told her that I purchased a ticket for her.
You just said up thread you bot some lottery tickets!!
You are gambling!! What's that make you????
Yeah you have "skin in the game".....
Do you really believe the poor don't gamble?
Do really believe....it's not a burden on the poor?
Do you really think...people of little means are not wasting their money on games of chance?
Really?
I mean...I just caught you in a lie.
Cat, got your tongue?

Any winners?
Not me.
I won four bucks.
Perhaps I can retire now.
Or to quote the Butler from "Trading Places"....."Maybe I'll go to the movies........by myself."
LOL!
Played by the same guy who was Marcus Brody from the Indiana Jones movies.
“Do you really believe the poor don’t gamble?
Do really believe....it’s not a burden on the poor?”
Again you are making specious liberal arguments.
Not one person is required to purchase a lottery ticket. If you feel it’s a burden, then it is a burden that THEY choose to hoist upon themselves.
Are you a prohibitionist? Should alcohol not be allowed in our society because it can be a burden on the poor as well? Please check the 21st amendment for further clarification.
“Do you really think...people of little means are not wasting their money on games of chance?
Another specious liberal argument. I thought only socialists want to control other peoples lives. Clearly you do not feel that poor people should have freedom to choose.
“I have no skin in the game. Zero. I do not gamble.”
My reply, earlier, to another poster:
‘I, like you, don’t gamble. Sure I’ve been out with the boys and spent some money (but not much)!’
I do not gamble. As stated earlier I’ve been to hundreds of casinos/ racetracks and frontons. I have not gambled at those facilities. In some jurisdictions, Delaware for example, I would have lost by license and been prosecuted if I had gambled in them.
My reference to ‘skin in the game’ referred to my past employment in the gaming industry. When the company I had worked for was purchased by another gaming company I was required by law to sell that stock. Yes, we made lottery terminals that dispensed PowerBall tickets. I used to have skin in the game.
“You just said up thread you bot (bought is the correct word here) some lottery tickets!!
You are gambling!!”
You got me there Ol’ Chuckles! That’s it for me! Zero credibility from this point on.
“What’s that make you????”
Honest.
Now, have a wonderful 2016 and seriously consider voting for Bernie Sanders as you two have very much more in common regarding social engineering than I do.
