Tensions over the treatment of two cattle ranchers in Oregon escalated into an armed standoff over the weekend when members of a rightwing militia occupied a wildlife refuge and threatened a confrontation with federal authorities.
Ammon Bundy, the son of the Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, who was at the heart of a notorious showdown over cattle grazing rights last year, was among at least a dozen heavily armed men who seized the headquarters of the Malheur wildlife refuge on Saturday afternoon and said they would stay indefinitely.
They occupied the building after an earlier peaceful protest over the treatment of two ranchers, Dwight Hammond and his son Steve, who are facing custodial sentences related to arson charges. Both are due to report to prison on Monday.

Ever notice these urinalists never use the adjective “leftwing?”
I understand the passion involved. However, the timing couldn’t be worse. The ranchers asked for them to stand down. 0bama is coming back all fired up to go after the 2d amendment and guess what these folks did - provide a suitable crisis to justify his attacks.
We gotta pick our fights better folks. There may come to a time to pick up arms, but I don’t think we are there yet. And this doesn’t help the cause against 0bama.
The Manchester Guardian regards “leftwing” as normal.
Yeah, yeah - as opposed to the surrounding "lightly armed" Fed gear queers with their HK full auto submachine guns, and their armored vehicles...
Agree completely. These “militiamen” are coming across as a**holes. And if the Bundy kid’s interview with CNN is any indication incoherent a**holes at that.
Although I will say that given the Eric Holder precedent for armed take over and occupation of government facilities, the Bundy kid is now qualified to be US Attorney General ;-)
Yep. Also, this involves a complex legal issue which few in the general public care to educate themselves about. Unlike terrorist attacks or crime or general tyranny, the media can paint this whichever way they want.
Maybe they are going to bring Lon Horiuchi back out of retirement.
So, maybe 0Muslim needs to be told to "bring it".
What Would Trump Do?
Are the "heavily armed" men packing babies?
Radical, anti-constitutionalist, socialist, leftwing extremists. Never see that anywhere either.
Roger that. Big picture folks. Then again, maybe this is going to set things off. Sad situation in any case. How many of the “militamen” will end up charged, arrested and convicted in the end?
That’s what Lon specialized in...
Did you know that he was also at Waco?
Perhaps not. But the Rubicon has been crossed here. Thus we await the feds response.
This won’t end well for the Bundys
The only terrorists in this and similar scenarios is the federal government who illegally and unconstitutionally hold state lands. Unconstitutional federal acts are acts of tyranny.
Art I, Sec 8, Cl 17 of the U.S. Constitution makes it clear that the feds may hold land in a state IF
1) the purpose for the land is for NEEDFUL federal buildings like forts or dock-yards and
2) the feds purchased the land after the state legislature consents
Most federal lands do not meet this test and should, therefore, transfer back to the states either willingly or by state commandeering the lands.
“Feel good” National Parks, for instance, are unconstitutional. Notice that unconstitutional federal acts, like National Parks, no matter how good it feels at the time, can turn ugly at any time, because tyranny never remains benign.
Government by nature is not a benign agent. Government is at its core is an agent of force. That is why the federal government must be ruled and limited by the Constitution, the Supreme Law of the Land.
The media is salivating over this one. Expect them to be sticking microphones in the GOP presidential candidates faces asking them if they think these militia types represent the Republican Party.
