Rep. Jim Gooch becomes second Democrat to join House GOP, pushing Democrats to 50-48 majority

tate Rep. Jim Gooch became the second member of the House Democratic caucus to change his party affiliation on Monday, informing leaders of both parties in the chamber of his decision to seek re-election as a Republican earlier in the day.

Gooch, of Providence, has served in the legislature since 1995, chairing the House Committee on Natural Resources and Environment.

In a lengthy statement, Gooch said he informed House Speaker Greg Stumbo and House Minority Floor Leader Jeff Hoover of his decision in an email, calling his move "a personal one, free of any negotiation for personal benefit to me."

He acknowledged that national politics played a role in his party switch, saying that he "cannot support any of the Democrats running for President."

"At a recent political gathering Speaker Stumbo acknowledged that the Democrat party was the 'Party of Barack Obama,'" Gooch said in a statement. "I deliberated that thought and I came to the conclusion that I could be a member of the party of Obama, but that I cannot be a member of the party that SUPPORTS BARRACK OBAMAS POLICIES! The majority of Democrats do support his radical agenda."

I don't know about having this guy within the ranks as a positive for anything other than numbers...this guy has been a long time entrenched Democrat. Purely political expediency it would seem. We're 7 years into Obama now...just now switching because of his policies?

Is this the Rhode Island legislature? If so, I am shocked the Dem’s have only a two vote majority.

I’m certain you’re right. The thought that in November 2016 the Republican ticket will be headed by Trump and/or Cruz with them driving a MASSIVE ELECTION TURNOUT and landslide victory over Hillary (or whoever is the lead ‘RAT should she have her final mental meltdown) AND BRINGING MANY DOWN TICKET REPUBLICANS TO VICTORY ON THEIR COATTAILS must keep many ‘RAT politicians up late at night.

Don’t ask that question. You’ll have every leftist on FR screaming about having to keep our powder dry and how you hate America and love Obama.

When I saw the town he is representing, I thought it was Rhode Island, but it is Kentucky, so I think they see Dems in KY is like Dems in WV...endangered. In Florida, Dems are around because of cheating...

I would love to see CT lose a few D in 2016...

Republicans have already taken control of the WV legislature. KY’s has been delayed to switch over, partly due to extreme Dem gerrymandering in the House. The GOP took the State Senate there back in 2000.

Where is this? I wish people would not assume we know who a state rep is, however a big shot s/he may be locally, and post the state in the title. Thanks.

Yeah, if we had Real Conservataive Republicans, they would say “thanks, but no thanks” to these opportunistic a$$holes! We truly have a Uniparty today. It’s all about “legislative musical chairs.” These worthless turds put on a good “partisan show” and then go out drinking and screwing together!
