The annual New Year's Eve festivities and fireworks in the heart of Brussels have been cancelled for security reasons, the mayor announced on Wednesday, as the Belgian capital remains on high alert over a possible terror threat.

After the Paris attack Charlie Hebdo published a cartoon showing a Parisian drinking wine while being shot, still smiling and carrying on with wine flowing out of bullet holes. It reads “They got the weapons — Screw them, we got the champagne!” So funny! They could draw and publish that cartoon because they weren’t dead. My guess is the people whose blood was streaking across the sidewalk would have liked to have a gun instead of a drink. Anyway, the inference was they will just keep on being jolly and decadent. Well, look now. I guess they won’t keep having their fun. Maybe champagne and pens are not mightier than AK-47s after all.
