It's just after 8 a.m. on a Monday and the cramped courtroom gallery begins to fill with family and friends of defendants and victims.
The prosecutors, defense attorneys and police officers soon file into the dingy, dated courtroom protected by security glass. It's another busy day in Milwaukee County gun court.
Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Frederick Rosa and his staff have seven cases set for trial â all but two are so-called "speedy trials" that, by state law, cannot be delayed.
Rosa can preside over just one. Something has to give.
Over the next couple of hours, he juggles cases, parading defendants in and out of the sixth-floor courtroom, figuring out which cases will be resolved with guilty pleas and which ones will need to "spin" to another court for trial.
"It's the same juggling act for everyone," said Rosa, a 12-year veteran of the bench, referring to all the players in his court. "The stakes are high for everyone. You don't want to try cases if you don't have adequate personnel. Everyone has got to get it right."
The spike in Milwaukee shootings has swamped and strained the court system, leading to long delays of justice â for victims and defendants. That violent surge has prompted the most significant change in how gun cases are handled in the county in 15 years.

It is not “gun violence”. It is “people who chose to use guns” violence.
—as one of the recent posters on the article points out , the word “gun” in the headline should be “black”—
gun court?
Jumping’ Johosaphats! What is it about people there that makes their guns so violent?
What the Hell is gun violence ?! They are criminals committing crimes.
People with violent crimes on their rap sheet, should get 10 years for being in possession firearms.
I think this is just a ploy to get more money for the courts. Who the hell cares if its a dingy court room.
Courts are overwhelmed, resulting in catch and release for violent criminals.
It’s not gun violence. It’s black people violence.
That also includes all the other violence perpetrated without guns, like kicking people to death.
It is estimated that 90% of all violent crime is perpetrated by that demographic.
That is the actual issue that we should discuss, and which the leftist media tries heartily to obfuscate.
There's your answers right there.
The anti gun Milwaukee Journal Sentinel would never accept that even if you only used 3 letter words.
They think anti gun stories will sell their newspapers, yet they only get smaller and smaller with each passing year.
That deserves repeating.
But the really violent subsets in that are the black feral yutes, the black gangstas, the black drug dealers.
Almost all else is background noise.
Yup. Almost every black thug murderer caught in Indy has a long rap sheet that makes everyone scratch their heads as to why they weren’t behind bars already for their multiple felonies that would have gotten whitey 20 years.
Should be Democrat
Why make it about race
That is what Democrats do
After all it was not Blacks who burnt 6 million Jews
Another clear, Leftard, “UNINTENDED” consequence of singling out guns as being a cause of crime. It is violent criminals that need judgement, not the tools of their trade. If that worked we would special traffic courts for SUV’s.
I can think of a less than PC name that is probably the common way to refer to these proceedings in Milwaukee.
Criminalizing possession of a firearm by an unincarcerated citizen is unconstitutional. The RKBA says SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. There are no qualifiers in there. Operating that firearm can be criminalized. The RKBA doesn’t say there is a right to shoot someone with a firearm. So it should be against the law to shoot a bank clerk or a policeman or someone on the street. Maybe that is the sort of laws we need.
Let’s hope the courts get serious about this nonsense. This am on Chrlie Sykes, when they were picking leading stories of 2015, Mikul Holt (black newpaper writer) said that Sheriff David Clarke’s pronouncement that calling 911 would result in a long wait and the citizen would be better off to arm themselves was one of the top stories of 2014 and 2015. I was surprised.
