Trump Threatens 35% Tax on Ford if Mexico Operations Expand
Mustang 360 ^ | 12/23/2015 | John Gilbert

It was the Detroit News headline "Trump goes after Ford Motor Co." not how long Hillary went overtime in the restroom that got our attention. Donald Trump made a whistle stop outside Grand Rapids, Michigan to take aim at Ford’s plans to expand production in Mexico. Trump promised if elected he would threaten manufacturers with big tariffs on imports to discourage building manufacturing plants south of the border.

Trump to Ford, "If you build that plant in Mexico, I’m going to charge you 35 percent on every car, truck part that you send into our country," he said. "Every single one." Trump went further saying he would engage in tough negotiations with car companies to build new plants in the US and Michigan. Political analysts say Trump’s proposal would at the very minimum require congressional approval and possibly violate NAFTA.

Why should Boeing cave in to pressure from China to build a plant in China in order to sell planes there? There is no way to make a rational case that is a good thing. Why can’t China buy planes Boeing makes here in the USA?

This has got nothing to do with thoroughbred conservativism, or the consitution, it’s pure simple common sense. Too many don’t know what to do with Trump because they have never been exposed to a common sense, unpredictable, adaptable, America loving candidate like Trump. That is not Trump’s fault.

Just like eliminating the minimum wage at the federal level

Unfortunately, we still choose the government by voting.

I guess I’m still getting hung up on the construction of your question rather than zeroing in on your point.

I don’t think you’re going to find a soul here advocating for Ford to build anything in Mexico or that them doing so will be beneficial for America.

The difference of opinion comes down to what you think is the best way to going about keeping and increasing business dollars and jobs at home and what level and what type of influence the POTUS should have on that.

I know from reading your comments that you’re a big protectionist. Without even getting into the positives and negatives of that, I think it’s clear that in 2015 we’re probably not going to back to that and I think it’s also clear that Donald Trump is not a pure protectionist in every sense himself.

And I think that indeed, as we’ve already “entangled ourselves”, perhaps more than we ever should have, but we have nonetheless, going too far in that direction could be quite negative anyway.

Fair enough, but understand there are some of us who are going to continue to endeavor to be thoroughbred conservatives and place an emphasis on the constitution, and would PREFER to support candidates who are the same.

Trump is saying he would make an example of ford for screwing the U.S. public and economy and would make an example of em.
Good deal, standing up for us here instead of some mexican.

Joe baby, who do you think will pay Trump’s tax?

Buyers pay the manufacturer’s taxes.

We need to make the US a better place to manufacture goods, not hike taxes.

Yes NAFTA has been a disaster for the US. It needs to go or be re-negotiated in our favor.

“This would do a lot to bring jobs to America.”

On the flip side, he should say that if Mexico takes back its citizens, Trump will lower the tariffs. Tell China to piss off and move all that chopstick, meaningless trash we buy from China to Mexico.

If you go home there is a job waiting for you. Then you siphon off some of those taxes and use it to build the wall.

>> "There are many things that aren't being made in America because they can't be made here for a price that American consumers will support due to our country's existing tax/regulatory environment. No tariff can change that." <<

That is the essential fact!

Is there a downside to Ford building the plant here in America instead of Mexico?? If so what is it?

Off the top of my head....

It needs to go. All it does is cost the USA our sovereignty and our economy. What does it do FOR us? NOTHING! Any renegotiating should be done by TRUMP, so we come out winners, not losers as seems to be the fashion. Canada and Mexico can pay their own way.

An Executive Order that requires every vehicle brought in from Mexico be individually inspected for possible violation of regulations and potential use for smuggling.

They could be held at the border until the efficient staff of twelve inspectors could complete a four hundred point checklist of things to test on each one. When they hustle, the inspectors can inspect a dozen vehicles a day.

At that point, imposing a fee for those inspections renders the tax question moot, it's a fee for Federal service.
