What Ted Cruz said behind closed doors (SSM)
Politico ^ | December 22, 2015 | Mike Allen

Posted on 12/23/2015 6:55:57 AM PST by C19fan

In June, Ted Cruz promised on NPR that opposition to gay marriage would be “front and center” in his 2016 campaign. In July, he said the Supreme Court’s decision allowing same-sex marriage was the “very definition of tyranny” and urged states to ignore the ruling. But in December, behind closed doors at a big-dollar Manhattan fundraiser, the quickly ascending presidential candidate assured a Republican gay-rights supporter that a Cruz administration would not make fighting same-sex marriage a top priority.

So Politico has to go back five months to find a quote of Cruz talking about SSM. I have not noticed Cruz saying anything about this recently although I have not been paying full attention. Any candidate who claims they can "fight" SSM is deceiving the public. The main focus needs to be on defending religious liberty for both individuals and institutions.

Exactly - he said it’s a states’ rights issue and therefore not APPROPRIATE for federal dollars either to fight or to support.

As good as Cruz is, he is still beholden to donors.

Trump is not.

Cruz has stated constantly that he will defend religious liberty, telegraphing - he will defend Christianity.

What the feds have done with SSM should be and only be a state decision, as he has been one of the few to argue.

Only dramatic change in SCOTUS can do anything about it, but as President he can defend and promote traditional marriage and help protect Christians.

Cruz is right on this. State’s decision and SCOTUS is not consistent. If Gay Marriage must be recognized across all states because one state recognizes it, Open Carry must be recognized across all states because one state recognizes it.

Certainly not appropriate to fight it as a stand alone issue when the core issue is feds making unconstitutional laws they have no right to make.

And what is Cruz going to do for those donors? Specifically?
He has a record of doing what he says he will do.

Its funny how quickly some FReepers adopted the Obama position on campaign finance when they saw a chance to use it to attack a far better man.

Trump is the sinless messiah, benevolent to all and tempted by none. He is above all, reigns above all, and is to be worshipped by all as the holy one. Trump alone, because of his yuge riches, is worthy of being elected as president. He is beholden to none.

The rich will inherit the earth. Right, Awgie? Only the super-wealthy (such as Trump and Soros, et al.) can possibly serve with pure motives.

Unfortunately, despite his positions which align well with mine, Ted Cruz is first and foremost a politician and a lawyer.

He is the most paletable of the political herd, but we need a businessman with the balls to upset the DC apple cart and clean up our version of the Aegean Stables.

His a lawyer and talking like one. Gay marriage is tyranny but not a priority, blah blah.

I’m more concerned about his 17% national sales tax that would destroy any small retail business.

Exactly. We don’t need any more Harvard educated lawyers running things.

Cruz is playing a lot of people. More tapes will come out, watch.

Trump has been part of the Manhattan fat cat, crony-captialist, grease-the-right-palms crowd his entire life.

Does Cruz feel that abortion legality should be “left to the states” as well ? Let’s see what else comes out.

Trump has actually run a business, employed 10,000’s of people and built things in a very tough regulatory and pro-union state.
