Mobile. Meant to thwart an enemy with the ability to spy launch sites with satellites.

Who could that be...

We were going to try that in the early 60’s with Minuteman missiles. Not sure why we didn’t get past the design stage.

Still do. But nowadays the watchword in sea-rail-local transportation is intermodal. Club-K

Securing thousands of miles of railroad track is tough to do, and if you fence it all off then you’ve just got one big military reservation as a target.

Likewise, unsecured railroad track is perhaps *not* the best place to be transporting live, road-mobile nuclear weapons.

I believe all the Chinese ICBM’s are mobile. Destabilizing first strike weapons.

Securing track, if it needed to be done, wouldn’t be all that difficult. Not just trains can travel those tracks. Smaller vehicles can with an adapter called hyrail.

Placing nukes onboard subs gives them the ability to range over 70% of the planet undetected. Any rail-based system it going to be limited to the installed track and difficult to conceal. Seems like it would also be a lot more difficult to secure the area around a rail-based ICBM from attack.

"Destabilizing first strike weapons"

Except they only have 1-2 dozen that can hit the US. It would be foolish to launch them at us.
