CHRISTIANA, Del. (WPVI) -- A Christmas tree is all that is left standing after a driver crashed into a Delaware home.

Police in New Castle County say the 23-year-old driver was texting Tuesday when he crashed right into a house on Archer Circle.

On Wednesday, Action News got a look at the damage from the inside.

The driver apparently missed a turn, drove onto the grass, over a fence and into the back of the house.

Homeowner Salvador Mata says he was at work and his wife and kids weren't home either.

Mata says when he saw the destruction, his heart jumped out of his chest imagining what could have happened if they were home.

"I didn't sleep yesterday because I thought about it if that happened in the weekend it would be terrible, I can't imagine," Mata said.

The New Castle County Building Inspector has deemed the residence uninhabitable.

That driver wasn't injured, but was issued citations for texting while driving.

Mata reminds people to pull over, the texts can wait.

As of now, they have to find a new place to have their family Christmas.

Santa should have figured out a better way to put the new car under the tree for Christmas!

Some of the dumbest people in the world, those who cannot resist the temptation to text while driving! Darwin will take care of them soon enough, but pity the innocent victims they take with them.

I wish police car data entry interfaces had to follow the same rule. Driver, unless stopped, cannot type or look more than fleetingly at the screen. Passenger has to do that.

An aside:

“From 1802 to 1940, all heads of the Dupont co were members of the du Pont family...This control was reinforced in 1915 by creation of the Christiana Securities Company, whose major stockholders were du Ponts and which had effective control (28 percent) of the shares of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company...” From Wiki.

Seems like the number of idiots on the road has increased significantly in the last few years. In just the last couple of weeks, I have nearly been clobbered by red light runners on two occasions. In one case, I’m pretty sure it was a drunk, the other may well have a ditz servicing her phone. And in my neighborhood a few years ago, a young girl was killed by a moron who was plugging his phone into a charger. He said he thought he hit a mailbox so he just kept going. I came within inches of being rear ended by an idiot while I was stopped at a light. I could see from the way her shoulders and arms were positioned that she was texting. She didn’t even look up after she almost hit me. Then, out of self preservation, I let her get past me, and I could see she was STILL working on her text, on a high-traffic 4-lane highway. /rant

“The driver apparently missed a turn, drove onto the grass, over a fence and into the back of the house.”

Might want to build a ramp for the next driver who misses that turn!

Laws are for the law abiding moment.
In DE it is illegal to use any hand held device (phone/ GPS etc.) while driving.

Our house sits on a turn in the street. Makes our lot nice and big, about 1/3 acre but....Many years ago someone planted an olive tree right between the 2 bedrooms up front and right where a car that missed the turn would hit. It’s now huge and would definitely stop a car.
