Today on Good Morning America, John Cohen, a former acting under-secretary of the Department of Homeland Security and now a national security consultant for ABC News, dropped a bombshell: over the objections of security-minded DHS personnel, the Obama administration secretly barred DHS from looking at postings on social media by visa applicants like Tashfeen Malik:
Fearing a civil liberties backlash and âbad public relationsâ for the Obama administration, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson refused in early 2014 to end a secret U.S. policy that prohibited immigration officials from reviewing the social media messages of all foreign citizens applying for U.S. visas, a former senior department official said. â¦
Former DHS under-secretary Cohen said he and others pressed hard for just such a policy change in 2014 that would allow a review of publicly-posted social media messages as terror group followers increasingly used Twitter and Facebook to show their allegiance to a variety of jihadist groups.
Cohen said officials from United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) both pressed for a change in policy.
âImmigration, security, law enforcement officials recognized at the time that it was important to more extensively review public social media postings because they offered potential insights into whether somebody was an extremist or potentially connected to a terrorist organization or a supporter of the movement,â said Cohen, who left DHS in June 2014.
Cohen said the issue reached a head at a heated 2014 meeting chaired by Homeland Security Deputy Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, other top deputies and representatives of the DHS Office of Civil Liberties and the Office of Privacy.
No doubt the policy will now be changed, but it is too late for the 14 people who were murdered by Tashfeen Malik and Syed Farook.

Umm, no. Doubts still exist that this policy will change.
Trump has been far more right than he has been wrong. He has been the ONLY candidate to raise these issues in a way to start, and maintain a conversation. While I appreciate Cruz and his conservatism, Ted’s comments would not have raised this issue to the same level. I’m also not confident Cruz would have raised them in the same, blunt way. He would have been more ‘measured’ in his approach - which would not have started nor maintained any real conversation.
Well then, Jeh Johnson and his islamic overlord are, by way of their ill-advised policies, directly responsible for the deaths of these 14 and any deaths brought about by terrorists who have entered the country without the application of the administration’s “thorough” and mythical vetting process.
Will NOT be changed.. Mass casualty terror attacks are 0dunga’s E-ticket to advancing his gun grabbing agenda!
So 0’s policy made it impossible to prevent the massacre.
At the core of this is some seedy political deal with Mark Zuckerberg.
I’ll continue to fund your campaigns. In exchange you do nothing to scare Muslims away from Facebook so that my international revenues will keep growing.
Now I understand what the 'P' in POTUS stands for!!
This article is PURE BS!!!!!!!!
If anyone hasn’t noticed, Trump has controlled the national dialogue for many months.
“Fearing a civil liberties backlash and bad public relations for the Obama administration”
How about if islamic terrorists slaughter Americans because they refused to do their job? How bad is that optic?
Yes, I have noticed! He makes a statement over the weekend and it dominates the following weeks newscasts, and then the Sunday shows.
Trump was right (again).
It all depends on what his handlers tell him to do I imagine. If it were totally up to him, then it would definitely NOT change for sure.

What is more unnerving is the recent policy to less gun restrictions on immigrants.
Trump was in favor of taking in the refugees in September and his immigration lets ten million of the illegals come back into the country.
Your “prophet” is as fake as Mohammad.
DHS didn’t have to review them. The NSA had it covered.
What kind of name is Jeh. Reminds me of Duh.
Trump is running a marketing campaign. He is/has transformed how candidates can run for office. The rest are stuck in a 1992 model.
Trump is bring non-voters into the process - nobody else on either side is doing that. New voters mean the polls of registered/likely voters will not be indicative of actual voting patterns.
Trump is stealing black voters
Trump puts New York in play (I believe)
Cruz does not in my humble opinion will not be able to accomplish any of those things.
