1932 and 1944: Two new books shine spotlight on success, failure of FDR

Franklin Delano Roosevelt loved to keep secrets.

He didn't want the public to know he was bound to a wheelchair, so he went to elaborate lengths to hide his inability to walk on his own. And when he was dying, his doctors hid it from the public. Even Roosevelt himself didn't want to know.

Secrets of a different sort lie at the heart of two new books about Roosevelt the candidate and Roosevelt the president, with a special guest appearance by Adolf Hitler, before he became der fuehrer.

David Pietrusza's 1932: The Rise of Hitler and FDR--Two Tales of Politics, Betrayal, and Unlikely Destiny and Jay Winik's 1944: FDR and the Year That Changed History bookend the Roosevelt presidency and perhaps the most tumultuous dozen years of the 20th century. Both are well written, well researched from secondary sources and good reads. But they are very different books.

The biggest surprise abut FDR is not that the American people believed him as easily swayed as thery are, but that Lucy Mercer Rutherford was in Warm Spring on April 12, 1945, not Anna Eleanor Roosevelt Roosevelt. Eleanor had to catch the train to Warm Springs, as I recall. ‘’The Waltons’’ had an episode about April 12, 1945, and the outgoing train with FDR’s corpse passed by Walton’s Mountain, VA.

He may not have been a communist, but he knew how to imitate one in private.

He's a hero to many here on FR for interning American Citizens by executive order. Similar to Obama's attitude: rights are overrated.

Economically FDR was the real turning point in economics in America. We've never really had true free markets or 'unfettered' capitalism since.

FDR for the most part got out of the way of the military
That is why we won WW2

Before the war he was the one who helped prolong the depression making it the great depression - see obama/democrats for something similar.
Wrecking millions of people lives.

He certainly had a communist VP with Henry Wallace. It is only by the grace of God Truman happened to be VP when FDR died.

I believe I read that Henry Wallace later recanted his past radicalism, but I could be mistaken. Most old leftists turn even more leftist before they die.
