Total sales in the US on Black Friday fell 10% to $10.4bn this year, down from $11.6bn in 2014, according to research firm ShopperTrak.
The decline in sales on the traditional busiest shopping day of the year has been blamed on shops opening the day before. But this year, sales on Thanksgiving also dropped, and by the same percentage, to $1.8bn.
A big reason for the decline is increased online shopping, as Americans hunt down deals on their smartphones, tablets and computers. Many retailers are also offering bargains long before Thanksgiving, limiting the impact of Black Friday specials.

Zipped in to Nordstrom’s today - saw something I immediately liked. Unfortunately his wife was with him ... but yeah, I did get something and after leaving the store looked at the shopping bag they put my stuff in and low and behold there was a Hanukkah menorah on it along with other designs. Cool!
I suspect many normal, sane people have tired of the mob mentality, media blitzing, crass consumerism and holiday spoiling of it. Amazon Prime (free shipping) is my primary store now.
“Glad to hear there wasnât violence on black Friday.”
Agreed. It’s also a relief to know there wasn’t anything like the Wal-Mart greeter who was trampled to death by shoppers back in 2008. Still SMH at that one.
Interesting that this explanation was mentioned in the article. I do think this is a factor.
LOL
LOL you should have come over and introduced yourself.
Ya, and his wife would have said: “ ......””””
While I’m not a big fan of Black Friday sales and try to avoid retail altogether on that day personally, my employer depends fairly heavily upon it, make or break for the year really. So, I was worried all weekend, hearing that sales were way off. I was relieved to hear 88% sell through today, very slightly off from last year but still pretty good. I guess my job’s safe for now, lol.
Crowds at local malls in my area were no bigger than any other weekend.
It’ll look just like that only with guns.
