John McCain and Lindsey Graham call for 20,000 troops in Syria and Iraq

Two senior senators called on Sunday for Washington to nearly triple military force levels in Iraq to 10,000 and send an equal number of troops to Syria as part of a multinational ground force to counter Islamic State in both countries.

Republicans John McCain and Lindsey Graham criticised Barack Obama's incremental Islamic State strategy, which relies on airstrikes and modest support to local ground forces in Iraq and Syria, and said the need for greater US involvement was underlined by this month's Paris attacks.

"The only way you can destroy the caliphate is with a ground component,"said Graham, who is seeking his party's presidential nomination. "The aerial campaign is not turning the tide of battle."

McCain, chairman of the Senate armed services committee, recently proposed intervention in Syria by a European and Arab ground force backed by 10,000 US military advisers and trainers.

On Sunday, he and Graham told reporters during a visit to Baghdad that US personnel could provide logistical and intelligence support to a proposed 100,000-strong force from Sunni Arab countries like Egypt, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Graham said special forces would also be included.

We should have paid whatever the North Vietnamese demanded to keep John McCain.

We are all Syrians now. A few years ago with McCain, it was “We are all Georgians now” for a country that borders Russia and used to be part of its empire. I’m sure most of his constituents would be quite content to remain Arizonans and be treated as such by Mr. McCain.

I’ll go along with it on one condition; *ALL* are strictly volunteers. If you can’t get enough volunteers to discharge that duty, then fuggedaboudit.

If McCain wants to really help, he should send his daughter over there.

These two are total idiots.

Can’t they see that Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Obama are complicit in the existence of ISIS? The Turkish President is making money off them. The Saudis see them as a controllable Sunni tool against Assad and Iran’s influence - and who the hell knows what Obama’s goals are?

Most ex-military men are the last to propose going to war.

But McCain would go to war over ownership of a cow turd.

He wants to remove Assad. Okay, that means allying with ISIS...and taking sides against Russia (and Iran).

How can you possibly win in such an equation?

What would our 20,000 troops in Syria do? Who are we sending them there to kill? There are many players now:

1.) Syrian military to defend Assad?
2.) ISIS fighters?
3.) Syrian Rebels fighting against Assad fighters?
4.) Russians (who appear to be defending Assad against Rebels but not focussed on ISIS)?

Syria is already a quagmire. There is no mission there for us at this point. We’d have to go in and kill everybody to stabilize that situation. And 20K troops ain’t gonna get that done. We’ll need full armored and Air Superiority. That would, of course, bring a Russian & Iranian reaction. Are we ready for that? I doubt it, and certainly not with the current American leadership. It’s too late for America to have diplomatic influence as the situation has already escalated in all out war. The participants are already “pot committed”. No amount of bluffing or gambling is going to get them to stop fighting now. Only the nutz (the winning hand), in the form of military might will bring peace. And peace will only come with VICTORY by someone.

China, Iran, Russia, Syria are already Allied. There is supposedly (according to our President and media) 65 countries in a “Coalition” against.... what exactly? Is the fictitious coalition against ISIS, Assad, Terrorism in general, Muslim Extremists, what? Is Isreal part of the imaginary coalition? Whose side is ISIS on? It’s hard to tell?

FRiends, it’s been said. WWIII is here. Just as in WWI and WWII, America starts on the sidelines not realizing what is happening and then is forced to join late. In the case of WWII, the catalyst was an attack on Pearl Harbor. We started and funbled following 9/11 because we weren’t nasty enough. This Cumbaya foreign policy we are now smoking our way through is turning the world into a hotbed of genocidal evil and America is in the crosshairs as much or more than Europe.

Alas, we do nothing to defend ourselves from the coming storm.

God help us, as it’s looking more and more likely that John McCain and Lindsey Graham will get the war they seek.

Amen! As the late GEN Wayne Downing said prior to the invasion of Iraq, “...putting a bunch of conventional troops in that environment is just creating a target-rich environment for the terrorists.”

After they gutted the Military to Pre WW2 strength how do these IDIOTS, DUMBOS think we can put 20K fighting men or women in harms way.

Let Putin kill them off. He’s good at it. Where as DUMBO ties our Military’s hands with DUMB ROE’S. Getting them KIA or maimed for life at 3 times the rate under GWB.
