Sens. McCain, Graham Call For U.S. Ground Force In Syria

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), 2016 GOP presidential contender, said Monday that it is time for the U.S. to put ground forces in Syria to combat the Islamic State militant group.

"I think we have to have a strategy and that entails American boots on the ground along with a coalition force," McCain said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

The well known defense hawks said that simply stopping Syrian refugees from entering the U.S. will not solve the national security threat imposed by IS.

The U.S. "can't shut off Syria -- people being raped and murdered," Graham said on CNN's "New Day."

"Shutting that lane down does not protect us," Graham said. "There's other ways for them to get here."

"You got to go in on the ground and hit them there. I'm looking for an away game when it comes to ISIL, not a home game. I want to fight them in their backyard," he said, using an alternate acronym for the Islamic State group.

Graham suggested a force of 80,000 to 100,000 troops from a broad coalition of nations, including regional armies, NATO allies and the U.S.-representing 10 percent of the effort.

"There is no other way to defeat this enemy other than a ground component that we will have to lead and be part of," Graham said.

He said President Barack Obama's decision to send fewer than 50 special operations forces into Syria shows IS that the U.S. "is not serious about degrading and destroying" them.

"ISIL is not invincible," McCain said on "New Day." "It's a matter of whether we have the will to do it."

Assad in Syria has already asked Russia to do this against ISIS. Therefore, if we did this, then we be invading Syria against their wishes. Moreover, it would most likely lead to a war not only with Syria but with Russia.

During the Civil War, it was common for senators and congressmen to take commissions in either the Union or the Confederate armies.

I would propose that both McCain and Graham be commissioned and sent to lead the troops in Syria, preferably at the point.

I no longer have any respect for anything either of them says. As far as i'm concerned, they are both excellent reverse barometers, and we should do the very opposite of whatever they think.
