Inside Trump’s Palm Beach castle and his 30-year fight to win over the locals

PALM BEACH, Fla. — The patriarchs of this quiet island of millionaires threw up roadblocks when Donald Trump swooped in and turned its historic oceanfront Mar-a-Lago mansion into a private club.

The town council, seeing Trump as an ostentatious outsider, handed him a list of restrictions as he sought to transform the property in the 1990s. Membership, traffic, party attendance, even photography — all would be strictly limited.

But Trump undercut his adversaries with a searing attack, claiming that local officials seemed to accept the established private clubs in town that had excluded Jews and blacks while imposing tough rules on his inclusive one.

Trump’s lawyer sent every member of the town council copies of two classic movies about discrimination: “A Gentleman’s Agreement,” about a journalist who pretends to be Jewish to expose anti-Semitism, and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” about a white couple’s reaction to their daughter bringing home a black fiance.

The move infuriated council members, who said it was a distraction from their concerns that Trump’s club would spoil a quiet street. But, in time, Trump got most of the restrictions lifted.

So many different tacks they take against Trump.

This is the one that says Trump is nouveau riche white trash.

Trump is sort of a mystery:

He’s the billionaire who never talks down to workers, who is REVILED by rich people and is somehow viewed as The Little Guy by poor people.

And it’s ALL TRUE.

The article didn't even mention Trump's battle to fly a flag there.

The residents were all a-flutter over this demonstration of patriotism.

Of course, Trump won.

Why do liberals hate displays of the flag? They seem to abhor the sight of it and what it represents.

Well, looks like the Compost has finally found the issue that will bring trump down. Makes immigration and gun control look petty.

Rush sticks to the Breakers, but Michael Savage was swooning over Trump in his radio interview with him, closing with, “See you at Mar-a-Lago, Donald!”

Found this in the article. Makes you go Hmmm.

"Since 2013, the Palm Beach County Republican Committee has held its annual Lincoln Day fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago. Michael Barnett, committee chairman, remembers seeing Cruz last year deep in conversation with Trump and wonders if one of the reasons they are so friendly on the campaign trail is because of a bond forged at Mar-a-Lago."

Trump and Cruz do appear to have a special bond. They also met over the summer at Trump Tower in New York which is the source of that much posted photo below of Trump and Cruz with Cruz's suit jacket sleeves being too long. My theory on that was Cruz left his jacket in the car (it was a hot day) and didn't expect his picture to be taken. When it was, Trump probably loaned him one of his.

So what kind of deal might they have with each other?

Well I think it is fair to say that without Trump being in the race, Jebbie Bush would have the nomination just about all wrapped up by now and that all the vitriol that was directed at Trump these past few months would have been directed instead at Cruz.

So perhaps Trump agreed to run for president to keep the heat off Cruz. And in the case Trump actually happened to win the nomination and election, he would have a spot for Cruz in his administration (if not VP). And likewise should Cruz be the winner.

Trump has filed three lawsuits over perhaps his biggest irritation: the planes that fly over Mar-a-Lago, which sits just a couple miles from the West Palm Beach airport's main runway........People in town now speculate Trump might have finally found a way to clear the sky above. If elected president and the house becomes the winter White House as the original owner intended, the Secret Service could order a no-fly zone.

Now I'm convinced. Trump will be our next president. He wants that no-fly zone!

When Trump bought the land to build the golf course up there, there was a strip club just adjacent... it was called "T's".

The "T" was too close to the Trump "T", so he tried to pay the guy to change the name. He didn't sue, he simply offered money... he went up to $1 million, and the guy still refused. Trump gave it up and forgot about it. Most libs would have sued.

Years ago Trump wanted to buy an old condo tower on the Intercoastal, just south of Delray Beach. He offered every condo owner in the place double market value for their condos. He got the place, fixed it up and made money. Everyone was happy.

Those are some of the stories I've heard about him in these parts... and heard them long before anyone thought he might be a candidate for anything.

So what kind of deal might they have with each other?

I believe that Cruz is functioning as a one-man steering committee for Trump on issues.

"Donald, you want to know who's the expert on immigration? Have your people get in touch with Jeff Sessions' people. Jeff's the expert in Congress on this issue. His people will give your people what they need for a position paper."

I suspect that Cruz is the key person in Trump's brain trust.
