From July 2 through October 29, Donald Trump had an amazing run: Every single day, he was mentioned more on cable news channels than any other Republican candidate for president. It was rarely even close. Since Trump entered the GOP race in mid-June, he has accounted for nearly half the TV news coverage of the GOP field, according to data compiled by the Internet Archive and curated by the GDELT Project.
That coverage is immensely lucrative in a campaign where, despite record-breaking fund-raising hauls, candidates have frequently risen and fallen based on their use of what's called "earned media" -- the stories and airtime you don't have to pay for.
There's no question that Trump has played the earned media game masterfully. We can quantify just how masterfully by comparing the news coverage data with polling data over the past year, as compiled by Real Clear Politics. It's clear from the data that TV news coverage over time tracks largely, but not entirely, with candidates' relative positioning in the polls. The better a candidate is polling, the more air time she or he tends to get.
Some candidates, though, get more coverage than their poll numbers suggest they should. Some candidates get a lot less. The outliers raise interesting questions about media fairness. Those questions go well beyond Trump; lately, he's not even the biggest overachiever on the air.
Also, Ted Cruz has real cause for complaint.
Here's a chart showing a breakdown of candidate polling performance and television mentions so far this year. The green bar shows a candidate's average percentage of support in the polls compiled by Real Clear Politics for their polling average. The blue bar shows the candidate's share of all on-air mentions for GOP candidates on national cable networks this year.

BUT, contrary to the article's conclusion that the Cruz blackout is not "ideological"; it most certainly is-- and the evidence is right there in the article's charts. The networks are freezing out the real threat to the Establishment.
I like Trump, but if he wins, the Establishment can negotiate with Trump. With Cruz, there's no negotiation.
It’s good to see Cruz pulling away from children’s table set.
And you’re right, he may peak at the best time.
I posted here 6 months ago that the MSM would try hard to freeze Cruz out. After that FOX debate, the only name not discussed at the wrap up was Cruz.
I agree somewhat .. but my contention is that if Trump does win the nomination, it will be imperative that Cruz run with Trump. Why; because they are the “dynamic duo”.
Trump is the PUSH MAN (out front), and Cruz is the writer of the legislation that will stand up against any Supreme Court challenge.
Perfect!
Good article by the mainstream media (for once). I wonder how badly the WaPo is at covering Cruz in terms of print space.
This article though doesn’t cover the amount of bias in coverage. Carson has been treated horribly as most people know by now. And Cruz had a big hit piece by the NYT recently, which Rush debunked today.
Anyway, go Cruz!
Good point. Cruz does not want to surge to rapidly, because then his poll numbers will be harder to maintain, and then if they fall even a bit, stories will come about him peaking and so on. This has happened somewhat to Trump recently.
Cruz surging in January right before the Feb 1 Iowa caucus sounds great to me!
I have hit FOX very hard on this issue of not mentioning the name of Ted Cruz .. even when he moved into 3rd place. And, now again, FOX is showing Rubio ahead of Cruz .. and I’m just not buying it.
FOX is playing a very, very dangerous game. If they aren’t careful, they will come off in the same category with POLITICO .. in the toilet on credibility.
It is the Marxist trick of isolating—shutting out and ignoring.
Through out history, people who proclaim the Truth are marginalized, isolated, demeaned, etc......it is no different now——you are just noticing the “trick” because it is being applied to Cruz.
The one of ignoring works because so many Americans have the attention span of a gnat. Demonization and making candidate look “dumb” works well-—but it is hard to apply to Cruz. He is such a brilliant, moral man. D’Souza— they were able to nail with a law—to hide him for a while and keep him on the defensive and demean him so people will not listen to him. Hopefully, he can rise and be heard too, since he is so brilliant.
They have to control the narrative——Words and Language control the perceptions of the ignorant voting masses that need to be swayed—and they only are aware of the headlines in MSM.
It is why controlling all information is the first thing Marxists do and they were mad as SNL airing Trump. Visibility is half of it.
They control most of our information and all public schools for over 60 years....to get us to this dangerous point in history where lies and misinformation and images shape “thinking” (emotions).
If we can’t break their monolithic controls—esp. of Common Core and control of schools, we are dead as a nation. Emotion controls voting—not Reason. And it is all about “perceptions”—which are created by MSM.
Contrast with dozens of FReepers whining that Cruz wasn’t doing enough...was not polling high enough, had no chance. They’re still here and clinging to those ideas.
It's happened to Walker, Fiorina, and to an extent Rand Paul and Huckabee. It's no use peaking in August, September, October, November or even December. Start really peaking in January for Iowa and carry the momentum to the SEC primaries and beyond. This is a marathon, and like most marathons, the lead changes quite a few times before the final stretch. Lots of runners rush to the lead at the start of the race and run out of steam by the middle of the race.
Using Horse Racing as an example, it’s very rare to come across a Secretariat for a candidate. Ted’s strategy seems the best, hanging around 3rd, or 4th, and excelling across the finish line ahead of everyone at the last minute.
The media needs to start covering the candidates positions more and forget some of these peripheral non-issues.
“You can’t fight Ted Cruz’s substance with Marco Rubio Empty shell. Cruz will CRUSH Rubio.”
Right on, Smoking Joe!
