Syrian rebels recaptured a village and surrounding areas in the west of the country on Friday, consolidating significant advances made the day before at the expense of pro-government forces, a monitoring group said.
...Morek's capture was a blow to the Russian-backed campaign in the west and northwest of the country, where it has had limited success in retaking territory gained by rebels early this year.

As of Sunday Russian warplanes shelling âMourk⬠city in Hama northern suburb. It’s my understanding they withdrew in order for this bombing to occur as the terroists took over.
You’re up kind of late. Is that a Russian strategy, abandon the front lines so military pressure can be brought to bear?
But is it now reconsidering that situation and preparing to ditch the Syrian leader? The question deserves more than a yes or no answer. Russia is having to rethink its approach because its political-military strategy to prop up the Assad regime, if not the president, has not been successful.
But then the problems began. Despite more than 1,600 Russian aerial missions, hitting more than 2,000 targets, Assadâs army largely has failed to gain ground. The only advance was south of Aleppo city â and even there the Syrian military has yet to capture a major position. Meanwhile, it was the Islamic State who won a strategic victory, cutting the main route into Aleppo. Rebels have also gained territory in a counter-offensive in Hama Province.
Looks like, from Journalists on the ground, there are at least 19 different terroists groups in operations there. All making claims for areas they take. Fighting against each other.
Itâs partly a civil war of government against people;..... partly a religious war pitting Assadâs minority Alawite sect, aligned with Shiite fighters from Iran and Hezbollah in Lebanon, against Sunni rebel groups;.......and increasingly a proxy war featuring Russia and Iran against the United States and its allies.
When you add up all the various tribes, terrorists, paramiltary groups, and who is funding who, coupled with shifts from one side to the other it appears it’s all about which side is currently taking a city or town as to what side they’re choosing to be on.
My understanding is they will shift ,also, by who pays them the most. So bottom line is there doesn’t appear to be any loyalty one way or the other for those doing the killing. They all appear to just be killers.
I’m up this “early” in the morning because I’ve been nursing a leg injury from work...here in Western Pa.
Beware of reporting by “Rooters”
They have an agenda
It’s not a cakewalk for the Russians and the SAA but they are kicking a$$ village by village, neighborhood by neighborhood, hill by hill
At least 50 militant militia leaders are now enjoying their 72 virgins
The Russians and Syrians just set up a 4th base at Tiyas and are moving the battle steadily eastward with IRGC ground and Iraqi militia support
This week: the battle for Palmyra, an ISIS stronghold
I believe Russia said from the beginning it was targeting terroists, not only ISIS....they make no distinctions on which groups are which but target them all....with that they also warned Syrian citizens to leave the country.
I am not for or against any sides in this except whoever can end this war. I don’t see that it’s going to happen any time soon as long as countries outside Syria continue to arm every fighter in the arena. In fact this will extend the war....
Most civil wars can last ten years....this one is just half way...but as said, with the outside countries now operating in the country this will likely exceed ten years.
Maybe you need to post what Sputnik News has to say about it so we can all know what Putin and you want us to know
IF Reuters is accurate (they sometimes are), I think I would stay far away from this village for the next 72-hours or so. Those flaming rocket thingies the Ruskies have are pretty scary.
Oldplayer
The reporting coming out of Syria is at least as accurate as that coming from the Donbas earlier.../s
OK, will do
Sputnik is just one small source of news about what is happening in the war, but one can seek out corroborating reports from multiple sources. as I do
In the US media, news reporting about the war in Syria is like....
(crickets)
If assessments show that Russia is gaining ground against terrorists, why is it propaganda or being a “Putinista” to say so?
So, are these the good guys or the bad guys?
I keep losing track.
the Russians did not warn Syrians to leave the country (I think they warned certain special CIA assets to do so)
In some cases, they warned civilians to leave the areas they planned to bomb.. leaflets were dropped
The real reason for the resurgence of the jihadists? Every Russian aircraft has been shot right out of the skies using the THOUSANDS OF MANPADS smuggled out of Syria four years ago. The jihadists had been hiding them all this time, because they just knew they were going to need them.
