The small town of Hamtramck in Wayne County, Michigan has become the first Muslim majority city council in the nation. Four of the six councilmen are Muslims. The mayor, Karen Majewski, is of Polish descent.
Indeed, for most of the 20th century, Poles made up a majority of the population of Hamtramck. But with the decline of the auto industry, the town gradually became a hodgepodge of 18 different ethnicities, including an influx of Muslims from the Middle East, Pakistan, and Southeast Asia.
"We are very proud and we are very happy for that achievement, what we have done in this city, for our city," said Jamal Alturki, a voter.
Voters gave Abu Musa and Anam Miah another term in office. Saad Almasmari was elected for the first time. Now four of the six City Council members will be of Muslim faith.
It's said to be the first majority Muslim City Council not only in Hamtramck but in the entire country.
"I think that sends a message not only to Hamtramck but throughout the region that people want their representation in offices," Miah said.
Although there will be more diversity at the table, they want to make clear the goal of public service stays the the same.
"My concern is to give the people, everybody, equal opportunity and be fair for everybody," said Musa.
"We are going to represent everybody. We are going to serve everybody, Christians, Jewish, Muslims, everybody," said Almasmari.
You would hope the good citizens of the town would hold the council to that statement.
Hamtramck is hardly a hotbed of jihadism. But being the first Muslim majority city council, there will be great interest to see how the town is governed. And don't let anyone tell you you're an Islamophobe for being concerned.

I’ll tell you what Hamtramck needs, a queer mayor. Houston’s term-limited mayor will be looking for work soon. Now, that would be diversity.
