Republicans kept control of the Virginia state Senate on Tuesday despite millions from billionaire Michael Bloomberg's gun control advocacy group backing Democrats.
The victories mean that the Republicans retain control of both houses of the state legislature. The party remains an obstacle to Democratic Governor Terry McAuliffe as he tries to tighten gun laws and expand Medicaid in the state, a battleground in the 2016 presidential elections.
Bloomberg's Everytown for Gun Safety advocacy group had made the Virginia races an election focus. It spent $2.2 million in ads for two Democratic Senate candidates in a bid to have the party take control of the 40-seat chamber.
Democrat Jeremy McPike, an Alexandria city administrator, defeated Republican Hal Parrish in a race in Washington's suburbs.
But Democrat Dan Gecker, who was also backed by Everytown, was beaten by Republican lawyer Glen Sturtevant in a Richmond-area district.
The races were part of a surge of money by gun control backers into state elections as efforts to pass federal gun control legislation have failed.

More good news. I hope this is a harbinger for the 2016 Presidential elections.
Too bad 2 million pissed away is not even petty cash to Nannystateberg.
I enjoy seeing Bloomberg spend a lot of money and get nothing out of it.
The bad part is that he unfortunately has access to more money.
Amazing to think only 11 years ago, he spoke at the Repub National Convention.
The campaign was colored by the dad of the slain reporter who threatened to beat a Republican state representative. McAuliffe tried to paint it as “grandstanding” by the Republican while the media spun the story using a different quote.
Bloomberg is getting beat at almost every turn.
I voted in nova but my district (30th) is so blue Republicans didn’t bother to run anyone in either house.
Also remember that Bloombergs money did win them the 29th district.
I recommend that the DNC run on national gun confiscation in 2016. It is obviously a winner.
Do you smell the Political Establishmentâs fear today?
Not so amazing at all. The Beltway establishment of the GOP is a bunch of big- government globalists who have no interest in the Second Amendment. They hide it well. That gun-grabber Rudy Giuliani was given a prominent speaking role at the 2008 convention, too.
Bingo. Giuliani however has mellowed on gun control.
He hasn’t mellowed at all. He just changed his tune when he wanted to run for the White House.
But when Democrat controlled precincts had 120% turnout for Obama suggesting it was suspect was racist.
Don't forget the Democrat campaign to let men wearing dresses use girls' bathrooms. Houston just proved that issue is also a big winner for the Democrats.
"Vote for Hillary in 2016. She may be an old rich white woman, but she will take away your guns and let men wearing dresses pee with your daughters."
“Do you smell the Political Establishmentââ¬â¢s fear today?”
I sure do Johnny, and I’m enjoying every second of it : )
Vey good news. The governor is now a lame duck.
The science deniers are telling us that donning a dress will magically transform a boy into a girl and our educational system will be improved. The marxist utopia will be achieved if the pervert is allowed to shower with girls and piss in a girl’s toilet.
Science has been introverted and perverted to “whatever you feel, damn the circumstances.”
Did you get to vote for school board? We had 2 great at-large candidates and one got elected.
