Republican victories leave Kentucky Democrats reeling
The Rock Hill Herald ^ | November 4, 2015 | Adam Beam

Just two years ago, Kentucky Democrats boasted a deep bench of three young stars who aligned to prove the party could still win in the conservative South with a message focused on the economy and jobs instead of abortion and gay marriage.

But Kentucky voters have now rejected all three, capped by a disastrous election for Democrats on Tuesday in which they lost four of the five statewide constitutional offices they held coming into the election, including the governor's office for just the second time since 1971.

"The degree to which the national party is out of step with mainstream Kentuckians has created an environment where it's extraordinarily difficult for a Democrat to win statewide," said state Auditor Adam Edelen, who lost his re-election bid to little known Republican state representative Mike Harmon.

Edelen's loss was particularly tough for Democrats, as he was seen as the party's likely candidate to challenge Republican U.S. Sen. Rand Paul in 2016. But Edelen's loss, coupled with Democrat Jack Conway's loss to Republican Matt Bevin for governor and Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes' 15-point drubbing to Mitch McConnell in the 2014 Senate race, leaves few obvious options for Democrats heading into the midterm elections.

I think Kentucky Democrats are regretting the day they ever heard the name “Kim Davis.”

Great news. Republicans won most of the statewide offices and very nearly won state AG and SOS. The AG race was decided by about 2,000 votes out of some 960,000 cast. This is one of the worst defeats for Kentucky Democrats in state elections ever. A great sign for 2016.

After the battle over Mitch’s seat the RINOs and conservatives united... and beat the Dems badly.

I don’t understand how RINOs everywhere don’t get the message.

Agreed.

Governor Beshear completely threw his own Party under the bus by not convening a special legislative session to enact freedom of conscience accomidations for public officials like Davis.

Yes, very much so. Democrats thought Bevin was going to lose, but they got a rude awakening.

“We can’t let (Republicans) make people believe that we are not godly people,” Stumbo said. “We can’t (let Republicans) make them believe that only Christians are Republicans and Republicans therefore are entitled to hold office.”

Don’t know any way a Biblical Christian can vote for a Democrat knowing the DNC platform.

Beashear lives in a bubble and thought the state was in the tank for homo marriage and the rest of the state democrat lemmings followed him right over the cliff.

I do hope Bevin has a thicker skin and a backbone than the last Republican gov. Fletcher, he was a disaster. Every time something controversial came up and the liberal press in Lexington and Louisville started out he ran for the hills. Then he took a surplus and wasted it on a bunch of golf courses and state spending instead of saving some and giving the rest back to the taxpayers.
