NOAA refuses to comply with House science committee subpoena

A study done by NOAA scientists in July contradicted previous evidence that global warming was declining. The House science committee now demands internal communications related to the study.

In a study published in the journal Science in July, scientists indicated that average global temperatures have continued to rise in the 21st century, contradicting previous evidence that suggested a global warming hiatus. The analysis, based on temperature records from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, has now come under congressional scrutiny.

In July, the US House of Representatives Science, Space and Technology committee head, Rep. Lamar Smith (R) of Texas, asked NOAA for both data and internal communications related to the study led by Thomas Karl.

While NOAA conceded publicly available data related to the study, it has refused to release internal communications, citing the “long-standing practice in the scientific community to protect the confidentiality of deliberative scientific discussions,” as reported by Nature.

There is collusion and subterfuge here. There is no “long standing” preclusion about reporting what is purported to be the truth. NO ONE need defend truth. I will fend for itself - quite ably.

This agency is nothing but a political shill for the Obama tyrant.

More proof that we are fully the Soviet Union in every way.

Global Warming, aka "Climate change," aka "Gaia worship" is a religion and must be taken on faith, regardless of any evidence to the contrary.

Incidentally, it has been unconstitutionally deemed our State Religion.

Outrageous! That agency head should be held in contempt of Congress then impeached.

The word has gone out far and wide. If you are in government you can do whatever you want. No punishment will ensue.

The punishment is for those seeking the truth. This is the most neutral article I could find. All the others are vilifying the GOP for being on a witch hunt and for being climate deniers.

Unless NOAA is committed to transparency, there is no way their work product should be used to influence policy.

NOAA has painted themselves into a corner.

If they comply with the subpoena, they will have to hand over all sorts of documents where they discuss data manipulation. Even if they were doing their best to report the most accurate information possible, such documents would be excerpted and quoted in such a way to make them look like fools or criminals (or both!).

If they have a Shredding Party before complying with the subpoena, they will be criminally liable. It is almost impossible to eliminate the paper trail in a case like this, unless one is running major government organization by routing all communication through a home-brew server in the basement of one’s house... but that would be crazy!

Their only possible defense is to refuse to comply, using whatever hand-waving arguments necessary, and dare Congress to hold them is contempt.

“They actually believe they are above the law.”

That’s because to take them down is a huge effort. Almost nobody thinks that effort is worthwhile. It would be very hard to cancel their funding and they know it. Heck, the Rural Electric Board, the agency set up by FDR to bring electricity to outlying regions accomplished its goal in the ‘50’s. Yet it is still with us and gets bigger every year.
