University of Mississippi removed the state flag on its Oxford campus Monday morning because the banner contains the Confederate battle emblem, which some see as a painful reminder of slavery and segregation.

Was the emblem on the flag put there shortly after the Civil War or is it from a change made in reaction to the civil rights movement of the 1960s?

I’m looking for the context for including it on the state flag.

Current flag was adopted in 1894. The prior 1861 flag looked more like the later ‘unstained banner’ of the Confederacy. Mostly white, a ‘Bonnie Blue’ instead of the St. Andrews cross in the corner, red stripe on the outer edge, but with a green tree in the center of the white area.

They smash the icons shortly before the revolution/civil war.

I am fine with the present context. The last culture standing, wins.

I think the present flag was adopted in the 1890’s, when the white supremacist Democratic Party was engaged in the ultimately successful process of disenfranchising all black voters (who were Republicans).

It doesn’t matter whether it was put there because of the run up to the war’s centennial or as protest against the so-called civil rights legislation. The people put it on the flag and voted to keep that flag.

The civil rights bills brought the Feds into every aspect of our lives including how you sell your house and whether our efforts to curtail rampant vote-buying are discriminatory. The 1960s legislation went a long way in making the Federal Minotaur that we have today.

Hope they’re returning the tainted money from the state coffers.

Something about being invaded and their families killed.

some see as a painful reminder of slavery and segregation

The Stars and Stripes flew over slavery longer than any Confederate flag.

As for segregation, well, there weren't any Confederate flags at this parade:

Ole Miss is run by libs as is Oxford

Some are Bernie Sanders types

Many if not most are interlopers

But Trent Lotts son started it all 15 years ago with Dixie and the flags like his daddy a cheerleader too

Ole Miss will do anything to appease a black athlete for the football team.

The fact that a black man can take his family and walk all around a waving confederate flag and then go to his own home, mocks any vestige of slavery that that flag might have represented. However, if the sight of flag causes a single minded hatred or a compulsion to strive for its destruction, then he himself has put on the chains of slavery again.

Dirty little secret, the klan was also very active up north. When I grew up in Monsey, NY (25 mi NW of NYC) a few miles down the road was a dilapidated old building alongside one of the old Eire Lackawanna RR tracks that was used as a meeting house for the local klan chapter many years earlier. And yes, they would march in Memorial Day and 4th of July parades waving the Stars and Stripes.

These college kids at Ole Miss likely were never even taught about the Civil war in School so they don’t have a clue. Their thinking is totally driven by social media sites like Facebook. They know zippo about the Constitution or states rights as they are all good little socialists.

How long was it, 10 years or so they got rid of Colonel Reb, the “mascot” of Ole Miss, and all was good. then something about cowbells, I think,, and now, the most “enlightened” among us have voted to take the state flag off the campus, as it’s RASIST! Why, Jimmy what’s his face, of Margaritaville fame, Ronny Muskrat, former guv. and all around sleaze, and other better than all us people who resided in Mississippi before they got really, really rich all agree, can the flag. Who am I to disagree?

I know one Ole Miss Alum who would definitely approve of that.
