David Brooks: The Republicans’ Incompetence Caucus
The New York Times ^ | October 13, 2015 | David Brooks

Posted on 10/13/2015 1:26:04 PM PDT by EveningStar

The House Republican caucus is close to ungovernable these days. How did this situation come about?

This was not just the work of the Freedom Caucus or Ted Cruz or one month’s activity. The Republican Party’s capacity for effective self-governance degraded slowly, over the course of a long chain of rhetorical excesses, mental corruptions and philosophical betrayals. Basically, the party abandoned traditional conservatism for right-wing radicalism. Republicans came to see themselves as insurgents and revolutionaries, and every revolution tends toward anarchy and ends up devouring its own.

By traditional definitions, conservatism stands for intellectual humility, a belief in steady, incremental change, a preference for reform rather than revolution, a respect for hierarchy, precedence, balance and order, and a tone of voice that is prudent, measured and responsible. Conservatives of this disposition can be dull, but they know how to nurture and run institutions. They also see the nation as one organic whole. Citizens may fall into different classes and political factions, but they are still joined by chains of affection that command ultimate loyalty and love.

Blah, blah, more concern troll crap. It wasn’t the liberty caucus that made 2/3 of the GOP voters say they’ve been betrayed. It’s the establishment phony “traditional conservatives” who don’t actually give a damn about really accomplishing anything. Brooks is terrified at the notion of real conservatives running the place.

Yeah, like we here at FR can REALLY feel the LOVE coming from Democrats and RINOs.

By traditional definitions, conservatism stands for intellectual humility, a belief in steady, incremental change, a preference for reform rather than revolution, a respect for hierarchy, precedence, balance and order, and a tone of voice that is prudent, measured and responsible.

Those are secondary qualities.

The primary quality of American political conservatism is adherence to the original intent of the Constitution, therefore a limited federal gov't having only those powers enumerated in the Constitution, and all other powers reserved to the states and the people.

Paladin2 is referring to David Brooks being impressed by the crease in Obama’s pants in 2008.

Basically, the party abandoned traditional conservatism for right-wing radicalism.

F*** you. The right did not move further to the right. The left simply moved further to the left, and then called the people who hadn't moved at all, "Extremists" .

The right has just become increasingly militant about the supposition that they are required to move to the left. No we don't, and we are coming to the point where we are going to physically beat the left's @$$ if they don't move back to the right.

Never forget, that the REAL POWER in this nation lies in the hands of the right. We are the policemen, the soldiers, the engineers, the farmers and the people who make things happen.

You P*ss us off, and we will stomp a mud hole in you.

You can take your faggots, your women's studies professors, your "journalists", your abortion providers, your welfare parasites, your government employees, and bring them to the confrontation, and I assure you that your problems will be solved.

So will ours... for a time.

I wonder if all of this talk about the Republicans is really just diversion from what is really going on in terms of how very seriously damaged the Democrat brand really is (people behind the scenes really do know about this but will not talk about it openly)?

” the party abandoned traditional conservatism for right-wing radicalism”

As usual, Brooks has it exactly
backwards. The GOP abandoned
any form of activism in favor
of going along to get along.
Even when gifted with all three
branches, they managed to grow
government.

Refers to this New Republic article, describing when Brooks first met Obama in 2005:

That first encounter is still vivid in Brooks’s mind. “I remember distinctly an image of--we were sitting on his couches, and I was looking at his pant leg and his perfectly creased pant,” Brooks says, “and I’m thinking, a) he’s going to be president and b) he’ll be a very good president.”

This, from the guy who fell in love with Obama over the crease in his pants.

The incompetence is yours, Brooksie. Now go dust your Obama statue.
