Why Obamacare Penalties in 2016 Will Be the Worst Yet
Fool ^ | 6/08/15

**SNIP**

For 2014, the penalties were relatively small. The minimum amount was $95 per adult and $47.50 per child, which, for large families, is capped at a total of $285. If your income is higher, though, then your penalty could be as much as 1% of whatever income you earn over the tax filing threshold. In general, individuals making more than $20,000 have had to pay a higher penalty than the base $95 amount, and families making above certain higher limits have had to pay more than the $285 cap.

This year, though, the penalty amounts are ratcheting up significantly. The corresponding per-person amounts soar in 2015 to $325 per adult and $162.50 per child, up to a family maximum of $975. But 2% of your household income above your tax filing threshold is higher, then that's generally what you'll owe.

2016: The worst year yet for Obamacare penalties The penalties reach their worst next year, with huge increases coming once again. The per-person charge in 2016 jumps to $695 per adult and $347.50 per child, topping out at a whopping $2,085 per family. The income-based penalty rises to 2.5%.

After that, increases will be more modest. The amount of the Obamacare penalty in 2017 and thereafter will be indexed to the Consumer Price Index, with maximums gradually rising over time.

Voters say Obamacare will affect their presidential choice

On the other hand, she said, adults age 50 to 64 were the group most likely to favor repealing Obamacare, and to say their insurance situation has worsened over the past year. Half of the respondents in that age group favor repeal, while 42 percent favor keeping the law intact.

Obamacare is one of Obama’s biggest failures. He’lll never live it down. Its just another nail in his coffin that assures he will go down in history as the worst president in world history.

I have no optimism that Obamacare will be repealed. Both parties benefit too much from it. Power over life and death is too intoxicating. And who really cares if the little people suffer?

About the only thing that may happen to Obamacare is that it will morph into single payer. That was the ultimate goal of Obamacare anyway.

I think that it will not only be repealed but eventually replaced with something non-government. It may take a while but it will eventually happen or it will fail due to costs and we will have to eventually take that into consideration as we slide toward Greece.

It seems that it won’t be because of the Republicans although it should be a major failure by the Democrats.

You are thinking that both parties continue as they are without major revolt - I actually think and hope for major changes because of this and other Democrat (Pelosi and Reed) idiotic things that things will change dramatically (actually just hope). If not, the country will be changed anyway by the infusion of immigrants (invasion) that it will not matter anyway. We will be Greece in name only...

Socialism can’t survive in the atmosphere of freedom.

Coercion is essential to its implementation.

There are still major aspects of this bill that have been put off till 2017. Remember? My daughter loses her coverage then and I believe the unions will have an absolute fit when they realize the deadline they put off is finally here.

Has Obamacare Really Reduced The Uninsured By 16 Million And Continued To Show Strong Growth?

From link:

So, 1.3 million people fell off this spring’s Obamacare rolls while 949,934 signed up after the open enrollment period.

Overall, that is 949,934 steps forward and 1.3 million steps backward for the federal Obamacare exchange enrollment.

More, the Obama administration hasn’t yet told us how many people dropped their coverage since March 31st. Health plans are telling me that their Obamacare enrollment, like last year, melts at the rate of about 2% each month.

I will suggest that it is important for these reporters to ask the administration how many more have dropped their coverage during the same period people used the Special Enrollment Period.

Here’s the bottom line. The Obamacare insurance exchanges aren’t enrolling anywhere near the number of people they were supposed to. And, there is no proof Obamacare has grown since the close of open enrollment. In fact the anecdotal and historical evidence would suggest it is now shrinking.

But we really don’t know because the Obama administration is just reporting the good news and a good share of the press appears to be happy to pass these numbers along–albeit in a technically correct but hardly complete way.

I read a report the other day that most of the people signing up with exchanges were people that were heavily subsidized (under 200% FPL). If people don’t get their deductibles and copays subsidized the signup percentages drop. If people can’t afford or don’t want it now, I don’t think increased penalties will have the desired effect of forcing them to sign up..

Tens of millions have full faith in Obama and “Obamacare.” They think it will be there when they need it. You can’t fix stupid.

Just wait until millions are hit with penalties from the IRS for not really being qualified for subsidies they took and the IRS back bills them....

Of course the media will blame the GOP....

I retired from a University System. It is going to an exchange for all retirees eligible for Medicare starting in 2016. Essentially, they are going to dump some money in an HRA account (much less than they had been paying) and leave it up to the retirees to use Medicare and some add-on package.

I think someday soon, they’ll rationalize out how they aren’t even going to contribute to the HRA any more and leave the whole thing up to the retiree and the government.

I see this as the standard of fare for retirees to come for the entire economy at some point, and I see this getting to a point where single-payer (government) comes into play if this practice spreads down into the working workforce - what Obama wanted all along.

We all would have been much better off if we’d have identified those 10-20 whatever percentage of uninsured and just given them a policy of some sort. As it is now with this law coming into maturity where exemptions and delays are disappearing, its full impact is going to be disastrous IMO.

ACA (Affordable Care Act-Obamacare) pumps money into the big health care companies from forcing insurance coverage on the people at their expense and increasing Medicaid funding for the poor.

Employers have been given the ability to cap their costs by using part-timers who have to buy their own coverage and through the Cadillac Health Care Plan Tax, their costs for insurance coverage of full time employees are capped and contained.

Those are some of Obamacare’s dirty secrets and that’s why Republicans will never take those things out of it with their ‘repeal and replace’ campaign positions.
